Having a problem when installing the CD the software does not finish installing. My PC is 2-3 years old running on original installed XP Dell Dim 9100
Say's An Error occurred during installation of the device. The driver installation file for this device is missing a neccessary entry.
This maybe because the INF was written for Windons 95 or later.
Contact your hardware vendor.
Have tried down load from M/soft and says CD is the latest so cannot do this.
Tried the CD at work on a new pc, after a tweak both sound & video works fine.

If you have the original CD which came with the computer:
1. backup all data - burn DVD's or use external storage media
2. Boot to the original CD and follow the instructions to re-install Windows XP (you may have to hit F12 while booting to get boot menu and choose the CD/DVD drive).
3. Use the second (drivers) CD to load the drivers for all your hardware
4. Support.dell.com and do all driver updates
5. Do all updates and patches from Windows Updates
6. Re-install all of the software which you purchased after buying the PC
7. Do all patches and updates for all the software
There will be other things to do also but this covers most of it.
Other option is take it to a computer shop and have them do it.
If you don't have the original CDs you can try contacting Dell for replacements (may be a charge for it)
Another option is to go to linuxmint.com and download it and install, this will be the easiest option and you won't have to worry about XP no longer being supported.
When you install it, open and click scan. When it finished click report to a file, save that file and open it. Click get drivers, find drivers you need, download and install it. Restart your computer. Otherwise, put your dell resource cd in pc, go to device manager, right click on the yellow driver and choose update driver. Choose browse my computer, and then in the field include in in search, find cd, and click next and it will find it and install for you.
If your data files are deleted then repairing will not help you have to use some recovery software but if some of the important files of windows are deleted then repairing will help and you will need the XP installation disc with SP1 or SP2.
Here's what I would do. Download and burn any Linux disk. Install Linux and delete all partitions while doing so. After that, initiate the Windows XP installation and see if that works.
This will take care of two things:
If you can install Linux, then the hard drive is good and the partition that was previously on there will be deleted (I suspect the partition is locked which can be caused by a virus or the software used to scrub hard drive).
Check your CDs for Windows (for scratches) or it could be your actual CD drive is out (laser) which would make the installation fail. If the CDrom cannot read the disk, it locks up like that during installation...even if it read before.
When you boot from the CD you will com to the point where it tell you that there is already a version of Windows XP installed. You will need ot follow the instuctions on the screen to delete the existing partion. Then and only then will it format the drive.
You need to copy the restore partitions to a cd for back up.the wipe the drive using drivescrubber.also have a start up disc for back up.wiping the drive from back to front should keep the basic files for dos.its easy and there is a free version.
Intel Pentium 4 Socket-T (LGA775) with Hyper-Threading or Dual-Core support, cache 1MB or 2Mb for 9100, or just 2Mb cache for 9150. I know of some of these machines having pentium D installed but I do not believe a Core 2 Duo is an option, whereas Dual-Core is. Good Luck!
