My bobbin keeps bunching up. I've changed the tension to 2, taken the bobbin case out, used a different bobbin....I don't know what to do. My machine is a month old and I've used it, maybe 4 times. My needle has broken 2 times in the last day and now now the bobbin is the issue.

try changing the needle
make sure the bobbin is turned the correct way in the bobbin case
make sure the thread has not come off the thread take up lever
clean under the needle plate and in the bobbin area for lint

try adjusting the top thread tension-one number or letter less, then
sew on a piece of the scrap fabric if you have any. to see if that helps

know this may sound crazy but it can hinder the sewing, I was sewing
a skirt the other night & I turned the bobbin the wrong way & inserted
the bobbin into the bobbin case & it didn't work good,, I took the bobbin
out of the bobbin case & had multiple threads. so I had to clean the mess up & turn the bobbin the opposite way & the machine worked
just fine

if you've taking the machine in 4 times to be fixed,,sounds like you need a different sewing machine repair shop.
have you tried changing needles?
have you tried rethread the top & bobbin thread
is it possible the bobbin thread in not correctly inserted in the bobbin case?
try a top thread tension of 5 & see what happens?

What did you do differently to gather? Did you change the upper or bobbin tension? If you changed the upper tension, set it back to 4. If you changed the bobbin tension (don't!), set the upper tension to 4 and fiddle with the bobbin tension screw (1/8 of a turn at a time, no more!) until you've got balanced tensions again.

Cure is usually take ALL the thread off of/out of the machine, give it a good cleaning (vacuum and brush only, no compressed air), oil if it is required, a new needle right way around, and then carefully rethread, following each step in the manual, and making sure you thread the top with the presser foot raised (which opens the upper tension and allows the thread to enter it.) Don't forget to put the presser foot down to sew, and hold on to the thread ends for the first couple of stitches in a seam.

Usually you should only need to adjust the top tension a little bit for different fabrics but generally it should be fine on 5. Bottom tension is set by a little screw on the bobbin case (if yours is a removable front loading type) or sometimes a little dial if fixed horizontal bobbin case design. If machine has been set up correctly from new then bottom tension should not need to be touched at all.

It sounds more like your machine is not threaded properly, causing the thread bunching up to occur. If you don't have a manual you may find a threading diagram at www.sewusa.com or www.singerco.com, the Singer website has instruction manuals for download free for many models.

It sounds like you may be a beginner sewer, in which case, I highly recommend taking a few classes to learn how to best utilise your machine and save lots of frustration too.

Let me give you a general lesson on adjusting tension that will work for any machine. I suggest you thread the top of the machine with a different color thread than the bottom so that it's easier to see what adjustments you need to make.

Thread your machine with the presser foot UP. The disks that control the tension (threadgoes through them) are tightened up if the foot is down. Change the machine tension with the presser foot DOWN.Because the disks won't be engaged (see above) if the foot is up, the diskswon't move. Start at the middle setting, 3. Go up to tighten, decrease toloosen. Each machine is different, even 2 different machines of the same model.The best thing to do is start at 3 and use a different color in the top andbobbin thread so you can easily see what changes to the tension do to yourstitches. Now use a straight stitch a sew 3 or so inches. Take a lookat the top and bottom of the fabric. You don't want to see any (or at least notmuch) of the other color showing from the other side. Loops on the bottom of the fabric means you need to tighten(increase) your top tension. If you're stitches on the bottom are causingpuckering, then you need to loosen you're top tension. For the most part, youreally don't want to touch your bobbin tension-leave that to a repairtechnician. The factory setting shouldn't be touched except by someone whoreally knows what they're doing. Keep sewing a few inches at a time until you have the resultsyou want. Now you're tension is where you need it!

If You have a drop in bobbin you will have to remove the hook and adjust the tension, however try adjusting the top tension before you remove the hook.

I discovered the same problem. What I figured out (after having the machine "repaired" several times) is that it seems as if the bobbin type may be the suspect. I started looking closely and it seems as if I have 2 different types of bobbins. So, I tried both types. Since I don't know the bobbin number(s), you will have to put up with my description .... the bobbin that is flat, top & bottom, seems to bunch up. The bobbin "bounces" when I sew. The bobbins that are rounded on the top and bottom don't seem to "bounce" and it doesn't bunch up the lower thread. Now, I have read my manual front to back and it does not say what bobbin type or number to use. So, if anyone knows, it would be a great help. I am assuming the correct bobbin is the "class 66" bobbin. Does anyone know for sure?
