Hi,

The initial click that you hear could very well be a relay engaging. For some reason, the built-in protection circuitry has detected a fault and has decided that to prevent further damage, the system would be shut down, this would be the second click, the relay disengaging.

Diagnosis and eventually repair would require a fair familiarity of electronic components and circuitry, definite use of a DVM and even a soldering iron. A service manual or at the very least a schematic diagram with voltage readings would make the checking relatively easy. Should you be uncomfortable going through this route, then perhaps you would be better off seeking the services of a qualified professional.

If you are considering a DIY (do-it-yourself), foremost to check would be for the presence of the correct voltages from the power supply board. Often defective components could be visually checked such as blistered/bulging capacitors, burnt resistors while others would need forward and reverse bias testing of regulator/transistors.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

    Hi again,

Other indicators would be flashing LED lights with a certain sequence to denote most probable area of fault. Along the same line, absence of any led when the unit auto shut down would indicate main power supply switching off (even the standby +5 is missing).

Variety of power supply or startup problems can result in this or similar behavior. Possibilities include:

  • Lack of startup horizontal drive -The main regulator is cycling on overvoltage due to lack of load.
  • Excessive load or faulty power supply cycling on its overcurrent protection circuit.
  • High voltage shutdown, or some other system detecting an out of regulation condition. However, in this case, there should be some indication that the deflection and HV is attempting to come up - momentary whine, static on the screen, etc.
  • A dried up main filter capacitor or other filter capacitor in the low voltage power supply that is producing an out-of-regulation condition until it warms up. A bad filter capacitor on the output of a series regulator may result in excessive voltage and subsequent shutdown.
  • A problem with the microcontroller, relay or its driver, or standby power supply.
One possible test would be to vary the line voltage and observe the set's behavior. It may work fine at one extreme (usually low) or the other. This might give clues as to what is wrong

Why is my toshiba 46h84 picture getting darker than before? Its becoming harder to see darker scenes in movies

It sounds like your lamp is getting close to the end of its lifespan. The lamp is what gives your screen its brightness. With time they start losing this brightness. If you were to wait to replace it till it goes out completely you would have a black screen. You can purchase a quality lamp at discount-merchant.com

Toshiba 46h84 rear projection shutting down

I have a Toshiba 46h84 with similar problem that needs a new green crt. Mine does not have a cooling fan. I don't know if having a cooling fan would help the problem, but mine didn't come with one. There are rear projection TV's that have bulbs in them that require a fan. This particular model uses a red, a green, and a blue crt to generate the picture and probably doesn't need one.

Toshiba 46H84 HDMI Card Replacement

The only thing I could recommend is to return the board and get the right board. open the set and get the part number on the board itself. You cannot modify a set to work things it was not designed for without reprogramming the microprocessor. Good Luck
