By mistake I bought a dvd rw disc instead of dvd-rw disc and recorded a holiday video on my camcorder with it. I usually then upload the contents of the dvd onto my hard drive (Pioneer) and then download it again onto its own disc so I can delete the original content from the dvd and use it again. This works perfectly well with the dvd-rw but with the dvd rw, although I can watch this on the television, I cannot copy it onto the hard drive. I tried uploading it onto my computer (which I managed to do) but it still will not download onto another disc.

Try uploading to your PC then converting it to AVI this keeps quality of video. Then if you want to download to a disk use Nero to convert it to VOB (DVD format) and burn off. You can also use Nero to erase the disk. (Nero 7 or more recent preferably.) You must also be sure you PC DVD read write head can take the DVD +/- RW. CHeck compatability.

Which disc can be used to recrord on ?

According to the user manual, the following DVD media you can record with this unit are:

RECORDING: TYPES OF DISCS YOU CAN USE FOR RECORDING

DVD+R 2.4x, 4x, or 8x ONLY; DVD+RW 2.4x and 4x ONLY.

NOTES:
It is NOT possible to record on CD-R or CD-RW discs.
IMPORTANT: It is NOT possible to record content that is copy-protected. This is usually true for most pre-recorded DVD discs and most pre-recorded VHS tapes.

PLAYBACK: TYPES OF DISCS YOU CAN PLAY

DVD discs - DVD movie discs (DVD-ROM); DVD+R; DVD+RW; DVD-RW (must be recorded using video mode or VM); DVD-R (must be recorded using video mode or VM and must be finalized).
CDs (Audio CDs, CD-R, CD-RW) - Audio CDs contain musical or sound content only. mp3 discs are CDs (CD-R or CD-RW)
that contain mp3 files. This product also plays CDs that contain JPEG files and Multisession CDs.
Video CD (VCD) and Super Video CD (S-VCD) discs - Like DVD video discs, VCDs contain picture and sound content. The difference is the amount of information that can be stored on the disc.
VCDs typically have lower picture and sound quality than DVD discs.
Super Video CDs (S-VCDs) can be used to record up to 70 minutes of digital sound and video, with MPEG-2 standard video and MPEG-1 standard audio-but you must use DVD+R or DVD+RW discs to record on your DVD/VCR not S-VCDs.
Additionally, S-VCD disc compatibility is dependent on which MPEG coding software, disc design software, and disc writer software are used; and the discs themselves.

(The above information is extracted from the user manual for this particular model and is a guide only)

I find it very strange that the user manual does not provide any information about DVD-R recording since this is a DVD recorder. I guess you could try those types of discs in it, otherwise it will playback finalised DVD-R discs recorded/burned in another machine.

I assume you have the original manual for this unit. If not, you may be able to download it free from various sites. (retrevo may have it but they may ask you for email address prior to downloading)

I hope the above information helps a tiny bit with regard to DVD formats for this unit.

Sony camcorder 'Movie recording disabled'

You need to finalize it in the camera, the one you used.

Then you should be able to access what little data if any on it.

If you can not get it to finalize then take both the camera and disk to a photo shop. They may be able to recover it for you.

Let us know the results. Good luck

Erasing the disc

it would actually depend on the type of disc your using for you to be able to erase the contents of the disc and reuse that same disc for new recordings. it's called "formatting the disc". it deletes all recordings and returns the recording medium to its original empty state. this operation is possible if you are using dvd-rw or dvd+rw (re-writeable) discs only. please refer to pp.12-13 of your camcorder's instruction manual for more information about disc format features. hope this helps. thanks:)

Viewing Discs on Samsung VP-DC161

RE; smasung DC 161(i) pal and possibly other models The reason why there is no disc message when there is definitely a disc is installed is because the disc programming has malfunctioned, Its because of Samsungs poor design, after powering up the camcorder and inserting a disc, the disc will load and a green flashing light appears for a minute or two while loading if the Samsung camcorder is switched off while loading the camcorder will essentailly self destruct and their is no remedy, however that does not mean the Samsung is completely useless, the camcorder can record on a 4 GB SDHC(max 4GB) card using the switch from disc to memory card

Format a cd

First some explanations:

The Canon DC210 will only take 'minus' format DVDs (DVD-R, DVD-R DL and DVD-RW). Only the DVD-RW must be formatted (initialised) before use. During initialisation you'' be asked whether you want to initialise the disc in VIDO mode or in VR mode.

VIDEO mode: Once finalised discs recorded in VIDEO mode can be played back in most common DVD players, offering the best compatibility. However, recordings cannot be edited (deleted, rearranged etc) on the camcorder.

VR mode: You can easily edit the recordings on the camcorder. However, discs recorded in VR mode can only be played back with DVD players that are compatible with DVD-RW discs in VR mode.

My preference is Video mode - I can then play the disc on a DVD player and edit it on a PC.

Now, to initialise a DVD-RW

1. Press the 'FUNC.' key
2. Use the joystick to select 'MENU' - it's in the bottom left corner of the screen
3. Use the joystick to select 'DISC OPERATIONS'
4. Use the joystick to select 'DISC INITIALIZE'
5. Use the joystick to select either 'VIDEO' or 'VR' mode
6. Use the joystick to select 'YES' to confirm your choice
7. Use the joystick to select 'YES' to start initialising the disc

Close the menu only after the screen display returns to the 'DISC OPERATIONS' menu.

Don't forget to rate this solution once you've tried it !
