To open the front panel you just pull it gently on both sides - it is hinged on the bottom. Detailed instructions can be found in the manual which you can download here: SL-MC4 Manual

I would suggest firstly checking the drive belt on the mechanism.
Otherwise if not follow these instructions: When you remove the DVD mechanism open the metal case top and bottom. Underneath the mechanism with the bottom cover removed you see a small PCB soldered to the loading motor pins. Remove the small PCB turn the PCB around and you will see a micro-switch on the PCB. Replacing this will solve your problem.
This would indicate the laser pickup assembly is the problem, try a DVD cleaning kit and follow instructions, if no change, far cheaper to replace the stereo.
is there a button an player that says "load" - if so you need to push that before inserting discs
if you dont have that button you have a bad sensor that is not "seeing" when you put a disc in and telling the player to grab the disc and play it
if it is bad sensor you can try opening unit and looking for a sensor (probably an optical one and try cleaning it with a qtip and rubbing alcohol but that might not work and the sensor might have to be replaced
you can only use imation or verbatim DVD+R. No other DVD's will work. I use exclusively the IMATION DVD's. Easily recognized by the logo on the disc package, it looks like the old movie reels.
There is a problem with the mechanical loading mechanism of the CD portion. The unit is unable to complete its "startup" sequence. You will need to rebuild the CD loading mechanism. You should purchase the service manual for the instructions on how to rebuild this.

The spindle motor is defective. Open the cover and see if the disc spins when it loads. If it doesn't, give it a spin in a clockwise direction immediately after loading the disc.
