Hi.
The dishwasher is showing symptoms of overflow. If the dishwasher bottom looks dry either there is water trapped in the corners or in the bottom panel, or the drain hose is set incorrectly, and water is flowing back from the drain line, triggering the overflow device. If there is no water and drain hose is fine you will check the overfill device for faults.
Pull out the dishwasher and check the drain hose height and elbow. Ensure that settings are as specified in the user manual. Remove the drain hose and put it in a bucket, then try tilting the dishwasher 45 degrees backward, secure it safely (ask help if needed) and start cycle, so that water trapped at the bottom can be released. Put the drain hose to correct settings and put back the appliance if this solves the problem.
If that does not help, then parts must be tested.
Check the Sump Filter. open the housing, and remove water present in there (see p.508 in diag). The overfill switch (p.308 in diag) is connected to the float (p.305), and can be responsible of the problem. The switch itself (308) can be tested jumping its contacts or using a multimeter to read Ohms at switch contacts. With contacts jumped no overfill will be detected (stop cycle manually after machine begins filling). Alternatively, remove the part and read Ohms while operating the float arm. The switch must change from a couple of Ohms to infinity (overfill) while you manually operate the arm.
If that does not help, go for the rest. Do not replace parts without testing. If overfill is testing good check inlet valve and funnel (744, 576). Check inlet hose, empty funnel and test valve using the multimeter (if valve is showing Ohms infinity, then it is gone). Next step would be reading volts from CCU (central control module), usually this is not necessary a case like yours.
Try first tilting the appliance and checking the drain hose.
Disconnect power before performing any maintenance operation.

Hello & Welcome to FixYa
The problem is with the float switch that is bad and needs replacement. It seems that the water inlet valve is fine as the water is filling and also other things are working fine as it will complete its cycle. The float switch is located inside the bottom access panel. Please get back to me if you have any other questions.

Thanks Kevin. Looking at the GE parts list & diagram for this model I see a part called the Switch Flood Asm part number WD12X10151. Is this the part that you feel needs to be replaced? If not, do you have a part number?
Kevin, thanks. Would this be the SWITCH FLOOD ASM part number WD12X10151?
As stated prior, my GE dishwasher, model pdw7880n20ss drain pump will not stop running/advance to next cycle even after all water is drained and tub & sump are a dry as possible. I have made sure all lines are clean, I have interrupted the cycle and pressed reset to try to get the system to advance or reset. I have also unplugged the dishwasher for 30 seconds to "reset". Nothing seem to get the system to reset.
Original FixYa expert opinion is that the problem is that the float switch is bad and needs replacement.
First question, is this the part that the GE parts list refers to as SWITCH FLOOD ASM Part Number WD12X10151? If not, what is the part number?
This float switch is above/independent of the sump. Appears to me (I'm no expert) to be more of a high water switch to shut the incoming water flow off if the water gets to high. I guess it would reason that it would also turn the drain pump on because the water is to high. I would guess that the "switch" to shut the pump off would be located in the sump area. So the next question I have, is this the only "switch" that activates the pump? If yes, I assume the pump runs on a "timer" to clear the sump area after it is originally activated or for a short time after the "switch" reaches bottom....
Just trying to understand the function of the "identified switch" to confirm it is the root cause.
Thanks.
