Sounds strange.I have this same model. I can't remember if you need the installation program with XP. As James says you can download it and install. You should install it without plugging in your tablet though as I do remember it will run you through the process of installing and then tell you to plug it in. I have never had problems with mine except when I plug it into a port I have that conflicts with another USB port (I've got too many ports!). If you find any port conflicts, plug it into a different one. It's well worth using the installation program because you can then assign different commands to the button and pop up menu (individually for each program - a lifesaver in Word/Photoshop). I hope this helps. Let us know. Once you get it wokring you will love using it.
Also .... just remembered that you might want to check the pen actually has a 'nib' a plastic rod/insert. I reversed mine bacause it was getting worn, but it fell out and I had similar symptoms, so I have put it back in the right way round and all works fine now.
