Cd will not go in the ps3 its an old model - Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

Bobby, it depends on the model of your system. There are different ways to remove the disk with each type of PS3. For example, the older PS3 (FAT) that uses the touch sensitive power and eject buttons, have a slightly different method than some of the newer models like the slim, or the super slim. Obviously, the "Super Slim" being the only exception in this case, because it has the old style CD tray like the PS1 that slides open from the top. Newer model PS3 systems are not backwards compatible. but if you can find the very old original model used then it will be backwards compatible with some of the PS2 games but not all. Older models are hard to come by though.

Best bet is to just keep your old PS2 along with any new system you might buy.

Xbox 360 is compatible with a large selection of its older Xbox games but recommend you get a new slim model Xbox 360 if you go that route.

I am afraid your laser lens has gone, you can buy a replacement laser or drive but keep the old drives logic board which is needed by the PS3 motherboard.

First, old PS3 or new slim PS3?

The old models have a power switch on the back that must be on. You'll know its on if you have a red light on the front of your console.

To turn the PS3 on, press the power button. A light should turn green, and you're good to go.

To turn off the older PS3's, you must hold the power switch down for several seconds. For the new slim model, just press the button quickly.

Hi mate I read my nephew's booklet, apparently you have to go on the internet and download a program from the Sony website and write it on a cd, then you run the cd inside the ps3 and it should format the cd and load the system files on it.

Alternatively if you are not prepared to wait 20hrs for it to format, pop it into a computer with SATA compatibility and format it FAT32 (not NTFS your PS3 will not be able to access it), you will be able to save all your games and mp3 and videos on your new hardrive.

Hi, how old is your ps3? if its less than a few years I would think about getting on the PS3 website http://uk.playstation.com/help-support/ps3/
with your model/serial number if its still under warranty you should get a replacement.
If its old and not under warranty it isn't that hard to replace a ps3 HD
It even tells yuo how to do it in your PS3 manual
Any 2.5" internal sata drive should do, and they are not that expensive

Depending on which model you have, if you have the new laser it has a twin laser so one read dvd music and the other reads bluray ps3 games. Its a failing laser or dirt on the lens you can can a cd lens cleaner, DO NOT open it if it is still under warranty just send it back or just call Sony they may still replace it, you need to call them before any thing.

You will either have the KES400a laser which is in the old models or the KES410ACA the newer laser

If you decide to replace your self always try to get it in the Deck as it will be aligned already

Its a normally a failing laser rather than dirt sadly

You can find the correct laser by the model number on the back the CECH***** number

You will need a new laser. I am not sure which version you have if it is the new PS3's or the older models? If it is the older models you will need the single lens laser and the reason it is reading CD's okay is that the lasers run off of different wavelengths. The CD and DVD's run off of a red laser with the wavelength range between 550-800 NM and the Blu-ray runs off of a Blue laser. So your blue laser on the diode has went out and you will need to replace the entire laser.
