Hi.
Well, if you don't need to save anything, then just format the drive.
This will wipe out everything on the drive, making it same as new.

To do this, click start, then my computer
then right click on the drive that you want to format, and select format from the drop down list.

This will open the format box.
If you are using windows xp or newer, then select NTFS as your file system.

Where it says bytes per sector, the normal size is 4096, but I usually go with 512, that way if there is problems later, the computer has an easier time of salvaging the data in those ares.

Let the format go all the way through, and then after it is done, reboot your computer.

You now have a clean, formatted hard drive to do with as you wish.

I hope you have a great day, and thanks for coming to FIXYA !!

It depends how far back you want to start over. You can just reinstall windows which will erase everything and set up your operating system fresh. If you need to really erase so that the information is irrecoverable check out Darik's Boot and Nuke here. I hope this helps and have a nice day!

It's hard to say from your description what the problem is but the first thing to do is determine the condition of the drive. You can check if there are problems with the drive using the free trial version of http://www.hdtune.com/

If it checks out ok then you can try to recover your data with Recuva it's free http://www.piriform.com/recuva

Or if that does not work you will need data recovery help. A good choice for low cost and fast data recovery is http://FreeDataRecovery.us

They do data recovery remotely over the Internet from a boot cd that you download and the best part is they just ask you to make a donation after they recover your data.

External WD 1TB. I cannot retrieve my files it says Parameter is incorrect when that is gone It shows there are no files on my HD and there are plenty of files all psd files as well

I'm sorry to say that this may be due to a corrupt HDD. WD Hard drives tend to die far too fast (I know too well unfortunately).
If this is under warranty, I would call up WD support service for a free replacement.
If you want to take more invasive steps, I will be happy to help you try and recover your files.

My hard drive stop data transfer for a few seconds and then strats it again - drives me crazy when listening to music from the drive

Copy one of the "music" files from the W.D. to your 'C:' drive.
Then, "play" that copy of it. If it stop/starts/stutters, it's your computer, not your W.D. device, that is the problem.

Otherwise, you have a problem with your W.D. device.

See: http://support.wdc.com/product/downloaddetail.asp?swid=119&wdc_lang=en

and "Download the Data Lifeguard Tools software (Acronis True Image WD Edition and user manual and the WD diagnostic tool)".

Run that WD Diagnostic Tool, to "test" your W.D. drive.
If it "fails" the test, then exercise the warranty to get W.D. to replace the drive.

If the warranty has expired, W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program;
buy a new W.D. drive through the W.D. web-site, at a discount.

Or, open the case, remove the disk-drive, and buy a replacement, compatible, disk-drive, and "transplant" it into your case, to revive your external storage device.

How can I completely wipe my wd passport hard drive and start over? there are files and weird backups that i just need to get rid of and totally start fresh but they are protected. help!

With the drive connected to your computer, Open up My Computer, located the drive you want to wipe, right click on it and select Format, you can do a quick format. This will remove all data from the drive so be sure you do not want any data that is on it. This will also remove the WD files that came on the drive as well. If you need these files just copy them to your local disk temporally format the drive and then move them back.

HDD stops spinning and locks up

Yea, the rule of thumb when replacing drives that have had running issues is that when a failure occurs, try not to use too much software off of it because you don't know if the hardware failure cause corruption in the system files. It is best to dump all the drivers and start fresh by going to the websites and downloading new. Keep safe and corruption free.

Is there a way to recover lost data from my Western Digital My Book??

Yes, there is a way to recover lost data from a WD drive.

First thing first - STOP using your WD drive immediately! If you continue using the disk drive, you significantly increase the risk that the files you want to recover will be lost forever due to overwritten. Every new file or action will take up more "free space" and reduce your chances of retrieving your deleted files from WD.

The next step - get a good HDD data recovery software to retrieve the data as most as possible.
