This could be one of three things.
1. a corrupted file on your HD, or
2. the directory on the HD is corrupted, or
3 a failing HD
Try starting up from your installation DVD and then running disk utility. (Insert your DVD then shut down the Mac. Restart the Mac and hold down the C key until you see the Apple logo. Once you reach the screen that asks which language you want to use, select English and then from the menu bar chose disk utility and repair HD)
If you get a message to the effect that disk Utility cannot repair the disk, run it one more time.
If you still get the message then you had better locate a service centre.
Sometimes letting the installation run its course and overwriting the existing system will fix it.
In this instance, you select the archive and install option, otherwise you will erase your files as the HD will be wiped.
