My problem is that I have just purchased Vonage as a VOIP phone line. I have a HP LaserJet 3055 printer/fax and I am trying to send faxes but it does not work. I was instructed to lower the baud rate,...

Configuring the V.34 setting to Disable (Enable is the default setting) to lower the speed.

Voice over IP (VoIP) services provide normal telephone service, including long distance service through a broadband Internet connection. These services use packets to break up the voice signal on a telephone line and transmit it digitally to the receiver, where the packets are reassembled. The VoIP services are often not compatible with fax machines.

If you continue to have problems faxing, contact your VoIP provider. Because the installation process varies, the VoIP service provider will have to assist in installing the all-in-one fax component.

Although a fax might work on a VoIP network, it can fail when the following events occur:

• Internet traffic becomes heavy and packets are lost.

• Latency (the time it takes for a packet to travel from its point of origin to its point of destination) becomes excessive.

How do I turn off ECM in my Brother MFC 8220?

From the Brother website:
If you are using Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP), (a technology that allows you to make telephone calls using a broadband Internet connection instead of a regular (or analog) phone line, review the information listed below. If you are not using VoIP continue to Step 8.

Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is not a marketed feature of your Brother machine, however there is a compatibility setting available with this machine that may assist with sending and receiving faxes when using VoIP. Adjusting this setting lowers the baud rate (modem speed) and turns ECM (Error Correction Mode) Off. To adjust this setting follow the steps listed below:

  1. Press Menu or Menu/Set => Fax => Miscellaneous => Compatibility.
  2. Select Basic.
  3. Press OK or Menu/Set. (For touchscreen models, skip this step.)
  4. Press Stop/Exit.

Km-2550 fax machine stays busy for long periods while it has document in memory and is communicating. The product is not a Lexmark, its a Kyocera KM-2550, but thats not a choice so...

1.....connect a regular fax to the line and see if you get the same response if you do then its a phone line issue... ... now lets troubleshoot...plug a phone in and pick up the reciever... listen for static on the line... if there is static... that can cause issues... call phone company... also if its voip... that can cause issues... if so tune your voip or get filters and this might reduce it... and possibly eliminate the issue.... if not... then i would call a kyocera tech and have him update the firmware for everything on the machine... printboards... scanners, fax... main system and if it keeps happening I would replace the fax board... still happening replace main board...

When trying to send a fax I keep getting phone line errorand when i print from the internet the text comes out as gobblygook

If you have you phone service thru an internet provider like Comcast, or Roadrunner, typically speaking, anything other than a POTS system with analog copper wires can be the problem. (i would have referred to this as a VOIP system, BUT, CABLE AND ISP PHONE SERVICE ALTHO IT IS A DIGITAL TRANSPORT, IT IS NOT TRUE VOIP).

Here is your fix--- set your baud rate on the fax to the lowest setting, usually 1400 bps. If you dont know how to do this consult the owners manual, be aware, not all fax machines are capable of baud rate adjustments.

Lexmark X6170 Has a shared phone/fax line with different numbers

Open the Lexmark "Fax Printer Setup Utility". Click on the "Connection/Dialing" tab. In the "Interact with Phone Line" section, "Answer Incoming Calls:" should be set to "If fax tones are detected".

If this is turning out to be too unreliable for you, you will need to either manually receive incoming faxes (by changing the setting to "Manual"), or you will need to at least spring for a separate phone number with a distinctive ring for incoming faxes.

How would fax run on VOIP? what requirment it needs?

typically faxing doesn't work on VOIP. i tried many times and sometimes it would go through although it said it didn't. other times it didn't work at all. VOIP has a limited bandwidth and the fax needs to send more info over the line than VOIP makes room for.

to have the best luck, stop all downloads and other network traffic while attempting to fax, so that there are no other programs or devices using the internet. the fax will have its best chance of working that way, although it probably still won't

here are some very good tips as well:

Cannot send or receive faxes

How to dial *xx codes when faxing When sending a fax, it may be necessary to enter in a *xx code as the first part of the number. Follow the steps below to dial *99 when using a VoIP service. NOTE: Since the *xx code is an instruction to the phone system, this must be dialed live.
  1. To pick up the line on the HP All-in-One, press Start Black Fax or Start Color Fax without entering a phone number first.
  2. When you hear the dial tone, enter in the *99 code.
  3. Wait a few seconds and then enter in the rest of the number.
  4. The HP All-in-One will complete the fax as normal.
What can be done to help the fax transmission? The communication speed is a major factor in fax transmission over VoIP. Currently there are three speed standards.
  • Fast - v.34 which communicates at 33.6 Kbps.
  • Medium - v.17 which communicates at 14.4 Kbps
  • Slow - v.29 which communicates at 9.6 Kbps
Changing the Fax Speed Adjustment setting to Medium may improve your ability to send a fax over a VoIP network. On most HP fax products the connection speed can be set to a lower speed. Those that do not have a Fax Speed setting generally communicate at medium speed or lower as this was the past standard. Consult your user's manual for information specific to your model. Changing the Fax Speed Adjustment to a lower speed Follow the steps below.
  1. Press Setup .
  2. Select Advanced Fax Setup .
  3. Press OK .
  4. Select Fax Speed .
  5. Press OK .
  6. Select Medium .
  7. Press OK .
  8. Try the fax again. If you continue to have problems faxing, contact your VoIP provider as they may have options to improve the ability to send and receive faxes over VoIP telephone service.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

Receiving a fax on my Lexmark X6170

for these companies, try disconnecting the phone tremporarily to see if thsi is interferring just with these particular faxes. Sometimes if a company's fax is set to phone/fax, it may be trying to call you first beacuse ths would be the default settings. If it detects no phone it may by default accept your fax no problems. Hope this helps.

Can't send fax

Greetings,

Seems that you accidentally ended the chat session.

Here's what i got, your phone service is on VOIP

VoIP is voice transmission over a broadband Internet connection instead of a standard phone line. Basically, Vonage converts your voice into data and sends it like an email.

Fax machines, like yours, are designed to work with the regular phone lines. As your phone line is digital, the functionality of your all-in-one printer & fax cannot be guaranteed.

Vonage also offers a dedicated fax service and you might want inquire them about that.

Keep us posted and thank you for using our service.
