SHU 5316 UC dishwasher by bosch. I think it is from about 1998 or 99. It blew a circuit breaker yesterday. I reset the circuit braker, but it won't even power on. It may have burned something out. We replaced the control board 2 years ago. Please tell us: 1. Is it worth fixing again, or just replace? 2. Any suggestios? Maybe the pump has shorted? THANKS SO MUCH!! Mark

There's no internal fuse in this dishwasher, so if there's no power you may well be looking at a new control unit and probably another major component as well, depending on what caused the overload or short. The most likely suspects are a burned out water heater element or circulation pump motor, or there may be a leak in the base of the washer that shorted something. You'd likely need to do a fair amount of testing to find the cause.
You can't really put a new control unit in and use the diagnostics program or the error code display to locate the fault/s as you'd be running the risk of frying another control unit. The cause of the short/overload would have to be found and fixed before replacing the control unit.
A new control unit is about $130-150, a new circulation pump motor is about $130 and a new water heater is about $110. Assuming you need a control unit plus one of the other parts, minimum cost for self-repair is going to be about $250 and $350 upwards if you call a service technician.
12 years is a fairly good average for a Bosch depending on usage, water hardness and how well it's been maintained. If it was my washer and it needed any 2 of the above parts replaced, I would buy a new dishwasher.
If you want to investigate, you're going to need a Torx T20 screwdriver for dis-assembly and a multi-meter for electrical testing. You need to start by checking whether there is 110v at the on/off switch, then power to the control unit when the power switch is on. If there's power to the control unit and the washer is dead, you're definitely going to need a new control unit.
If you remove the right side panel (when facing the door) you can test the circulation pump motor and the water heater for resistance. The water heater should read about 10-11 ohms if it's good. Not 100% certain on the circulation pump motor, as they've used different types/configurations of motor over the years. I think this one should read about 0.5 ohms if it's good. If you want to take a reading, I can check that for you . . .
