Toshiba DR570 DVD Recorder Logo
Anonymous Posted on May 02, 2011

I recently purchased the Toshiba DR570KU DVD recorder. I live and purchased this machine on a small Caribbean Island, and with respect to local people they have no technical knowledge of what they are selling!! The problem I am having is understanding page 79 of the manual 'deleting titles'. I can record ok on the timer BUT when I come to delete programmes, there is always an 'EMPTY' box nxt to the title I want to delete! I dont understand where it has come from but from what I CAN understand,it stops you writing over that space;consequently my timer recordings are being affected.I can only seem to be able to record 2 hours maximum whatever extended record mode I use?? The disc I use is DVD+RW. Also I have a DVD+RW disc that I used on a previous recorder -having followed the instructions to reformat I am unable to delete the existing titles,it will play them but not delete them. These problems are very frustrating because I cannot source any new rewritable discs on the island. Why has the 'empty' box appeared in the first place and how do you get rid of it ?Whjat is the point of it in the first place if it takes up unrecordable space? Help pleas.

    Hi,

Have not replied earlier because I have been experimentin.Yes understand what you have said and thank you for that (to me its a design fault because I see NO purpose for it apart from confusing customers).

OK well it has not solved the problem.

You mention right at the beginning about SP & LP - well according to the manual there is XP,SP,LP,EP and SLP ?? SLP having 8 hours of recording space??

That aside ,what I am experiencing is (apparently) a malfunction of the unit.

If I set the timer recording to 4hours (LP) I get just over 2 hours of a recording and this has happened several times.

So,I decided to try 'one-touch timer recording set for 6 hours - what did I get 3hrs 17 minutes ??

The whole thing is bizzare !

I have a warranty (which is amazing for this part of the world) but I really want the recorder.

I am wondering if I 'formatted' the disc incorrectly??

Well I have managed to source a brand new disc ,but this one is a DVD-RW !

Can you help me format this because - yet again ,the manual is confusing e.g. Page 38, 'DVD-RW will be formatted EITHER video OR VR mode according to the format mode of the unit??

Before you insert a brand new DVD-RW,you need to SET THE RECORDING FORMAT TO THE DESIRED MODE.

It reads as if the 'format mode of the unit'is factory set,so how do I know whether its video or VR and what is the difference, If I am reading too much into this ,and I have a choice of modes , what is the difference ? Sorry to be a pain but need to examine all the options before I return the unit.

Just need to make sure its not me screwing something up.

Look forward to hearing from you.

    Hi,
I have already replied to you but as I have heard nothing more I think I replied in the wrong place.
Thank you for your explanations in very simple terms ,much appreciated.
So,if that is not the problem it must be something else.
I am thinking it is a fault with the 'timer recording' mechanism' ,because I have been experimenting;at the beginning of your reply you refer to SP &LP ,but according to the manual
the machine has XP,SP,LP,EP and SLP,allowing up to 8 hours recording space.
Now I tried 'one touch timer recording' over different perioda and what I am finding is that I will get a recording of approx HALF the time indicated by each setting?
I then discovered this also happens with 'timer recordings'.
I have a 'warranty' with this machine ,but they have no more in stock and it could be many months (if ever) before they have any more. So I want to keep the machine if possible.
I have managed to source a new DVD disc but his one is DVD-RW.
Could you help me with 'formatting' this disc, then I will know it is NOT me making a mistake that is causing these recording problems.
Again I'me not clear about the 'formatting' instructions for this type of disc ,because it seems to give you a choice (VR or Video) well,I'me not a technician and have no idea what the difference is??
Look forward to hearing from you.

Yes the solution was very helpful.
Unfortunately it clarified what I thought the THOUGHT the problem was -but the problem still exists.
How do I get further assistance because I have already replied to BElectric without further response,
I have been in touch with Fixya technical section and have been told that I should have completed this section first before
replying to the expert. So ,hopefully I can now get further assistance.

  • Anonymous May 14, 2011

This is a reply to 'BElectric'.
Not Having much luck with technical equipment - this will be the 3rd.thime I have written my comments and asked for further assistance, but without response.
Your assistance was fine, but only highlited the fact that I was asking the wrong question.
Since your reply I have experimented with the recorder and have discovered the only constant problem is that I am only receiving HALF the recording time in each 'recording mode' and there are 5.
I cant see how its possible that the 'formatting' can be wrong, otherwise it wouldn't have formatted the disc at all (would it ?)
I have one last throw of the dice - I have actually managed to find a NEW disc, but it is DVD-RW.
Could you help me with 'formatting' this disc ,again the instructions are 'confusing', for me anyway.
If that is not the solution I can only assume the unit is faulty - which means I would have to return it,but they have no other stock !
Look forward to hearing from you.

The box is to prevent somebody accidentally deleting your files. The box enables you to delete multi sessions instead of one session at a time. When you bring the cursor on the session you want to delete press ok ( the center button sometimes labeled enter ), you will find a tick mark in the box. Tick as many sessions as you want to delete and then press delete and it will ask you are you sure ?. Click OK and it will delete the files.
Now you understand the meaning of the box?. Just imagine somebody pressing delete and the player deleting the whole disc ?????.
This is called selective delete.
More on reply.

Hi -

I'll try to explain without confusing you any further, but if anything doesn't make sense, please let me know. The instructions on page 79 are contradictory, which doesn't help very much. The upper part of the page suggests you can create extra space on a DVD+RW disc by deleting titles, while the lower part, in the grey box, states you cannot. The bottom part is actually correct.

I'll split this into two sections - blank/unused and used discs then explore a few scenarios.

Blank/unused discs

A DVD+RW is typically 4.7GB and will record approx. 2 hours of video in SP mode or 4 hours inLP mode. If you record more than one programme, they will appear consecutively in the disc editing menu, and shown as numbered blocks in the Title List. The last block shown will always be 'EMPTY', but the actual size of this block can be all or none of the total capacity of the disc.

If you insert a blank DVD+RW disc into the machine and view the title list, you will see this:

I recently purchased the Toshiba DR570KU DVD - belectric_221.jpg

Although you can't 'record' to a block labelled EMPTY, this doesn't mean you cannot record to this disc. The blank space on the disc precedes the block labelled as 'EMPTY'.

If you then record one programme of 1 hour duration in SP mode. the title list will look like this:

Once again, although you can't 'record' to the block labelled EMPTY, this doesn't mean this disc is full or that you cannot record anything else on it. The next programme recorder will appear between title 1 and the 'empty' block - as long as there is sufficient space on the disc remaining to record the programme.

If you then record a second programme of 1 hour duration in SP mode. the title list wiI recently purchased the Toshiba DR570KU DVD - belectric_223.jpg:

belectric_223.jpg

This disc is now full as 2 hours of video has been recorded in SP mode. However, if you'd only recorded 1 hour in total for these 2 programmes, you would still be able to record another hour of video in SP to this disc. The additional programmes would appear between the last numbered title and the 'empty' block - until the disc is full.

The empty block is always present and you cannot 'get rid of it', but it doesn't mean the disc is full or cannot be recorded on.

Hopefully, this goes some way to explaining it, but I still need need to explain what happens with used / full discs when you want to delete programmes and re-record.

There is a maximum length for messages posted on FixYa and I may be getting close to this, so rather than break off in mid-flow, I will continue the explanation for used discs in another message below this one. I will do this right now, but it will probably take me 20 minutes or so to write part 2, so keep checking back. It will be less confusing if you hold any questions until I've written part 2, but I will be happy to answer any after that.

Regards,
BElectric

    Used discs

Let's start by imagining you've recorded 5 programmes to your disc and the disc capacity is full. The Title List will look like this and the last block will still be shown as 'EMPTY' - even though there is no space on the disc left for recording :

If you now delete programme 2, the title list will look like this:

This does not create any space on the disc for re-recording. You cannot record in the block between programmes 1 and 3. It simply deletes the programme so it does not appear in the disc contents list or play when you skip to the next title during playback. You cannot re-record to any 'empty' block when it is located between two other titles.

To create free space on the disc for re-recording, you have to delete the last programmes which you recorded. If you now delete programmes 4 and 5, the Title List will look like this:

This does create space on the disc for re-recording. You still can't record in the 'empty' block (2) between programmes 1 and 3, but you can now re-record in the space vacated by programmes 4 and 5. Basically, you can only re-record into empty space at the 'end' of the disc.

If you now delete programme 3, the Title List will look like this:

This creates free space for re-recording in the block where programme 3 was recorded and the block where programme 2 was recorded is also free because this block is no longer located between 2 other recordings.

In this scenario, if programme 1 was recorded in SP mode and is 1 hour long, you will be able to record another hour of video to this disc, in SP mode.

Essentially, additional recordings always have to be recorded at the end of the disc. They cannot be inserted into blocks between existing recordings. This is slightly confusing as a disc doesn't really have a start and an end. If you also deleted programme 1 from this disc, the entire disc would be free for recording again.

Hopefully this explains it more clearly than the manual. If you have any questions, please let me know. You can reply to me by clicking on "Add a Comment" below your question.

How to finalize a dvd

Which specific model of DVD recorder do you have? You need to finalize the disc on the unit that wrote the files/movie to disc. For the Toshiba DR570KU, press Setup on the remote. Then enter the DVD menu (use the up/down arrows to navigate and then press Enter). Select Finalize and then press Enter. Highlight Yes when asked to confirm the finalization step and then press Enter again. Wait for the recorder to finish the process (it will take several minutes). Note: you need to leave some space on the disc for the finalization data to be added to it.

You can also set the unit to auto-finalize when the disc is full or a timed recording ends. For the second item, you will not be able to add content to the disc if a short program was recorded unless you use a rewritable DVD. (Then you would will need to unfinalize the disc. See the manual.) This is accessed from the General Settings menu from the Setup button. Go to Recordings and then select the Auto Finalize setting. Select when you want the disc to finalize and then turn ON the feature. Press Setup to exit the menu.

The manual for the DR570 is available under the User's Guide tab here: http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/modelContent.jsp?ct=SB&os=&category=&moid=2805105&rpn=undefined&modelFilter=DR570KU&selCategory=2797338&selFamily=2797342 . Toshiba has the manuals to most of their products here: http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/home.jsp .

Please add a comment with the specifics of your recorder for more information. I hope this helps.

Camera doing its own thing.

Depending on the age and use of the batteries it could well be time to replace them. The best test would be to buy a new set of high power alkalkine batteries which you know to be fresh and try them. If everything works then invest in a new set of rechargeables. A respected brand with a high milliamp rating is best. It is possible one of your rechargables has lost the will to live and just died don't add just one battery. Change the complete set.

I've repaired a number of Pentax cameras where everything was OK except for the batteries.

Recorded dvd's won't play on other dvd players Toshiba d-r410

You can play these recordings without finalizing them in the D-R410, but if you want them to play
in other DVD players, they need to be finalized. See pages 28 to 32 in manual. If you want to
finalize the disks you've already made, follow the directions on page 32.

NTSC to PAL

You have to buy first a VHS player that can play NTSC, might not be available locally in Ireland so you have to probably buy online (US). The DVD recorder is fairly comnon nowadays and all of them are capable of recording and playing NTSC and PAL. You can then connect the AV out of VHS player to the AV In of the recorder. Or you can use a VHS-DVD combi. You can google in UK, here is an example: Toshiba RD-XV45, according to the specs, it can play NTSC on the VHS and you can record to DVD on any format that yoou want You can go to this link to view other product: http://audiovisual.kelkoo.co.uk/b/a/sbs/100304323/16875665.html My father died of cancer 6 years ago and I am also transferring the Hi-8 videos to digital format using PC.
