The box is to prevent somebody accidentally deleting your files. The box enables you to delete multi sessions instead of one session at a time. When you bring the cursor on the session you want to delete press ok ( the center button sometimes labeled enter ), you will find a tick mark in the box. Tick as many sessions as you want to delete and then press delete and it will ask you are you sure ?. Click OK and it will delete the files.
Now you understand the meaning of the box?. Just imagine somebody pressing delete and the player deleting the whole disc ?????.
This is called selective delete.
More on reply.
Hi -
I'll try to explain without confusing you any further, but if anything doesn't make sense, please let me know. The instructions on page 79 are contradictory, which doesn't help very much. The upper part of the page suggests you can create extra space on a DVD+RW disc by deleting titles, while the lower part, in the grey box, states you cannot. The bottom part is actually correct.
I'll split this into two sections - blank/unused and used discs then explore a few scenarios.
Blank/unused discs
A DVD+RW is typically 4.7GB and will record approx. 2 hours of video in SP mode or 4 hours inLP mode. If you record more than one programme, they will appear consecutively in the disc editing menu, and shown as numbered blocks in the Title List. The last block shown will always be 'EMPTY', but the actual size of this block can be all or none of the total capacity of the disc.
If you insert a blank DVD+RW disc into the machine and view the title list, you will see this:
Although you can't 'record' to a block labelled EMPTY, this doesn't mean you cannot record to this disc. The blank space on the disc precedes the block labelled as 'EMPTY'.
If you then record one programme of 1 hour duration in SP mode. the title list will look like this:
Once again, although you can't 'record' to the block labelled EMPTY, this doesn't mean this disc is full or that you cannot record anything else on it. The next programme recorder will appear between title 1 and the 'empty' block - as long as there is sufficient space on the disc remaining to record the programme.
If you then record a second programme of 1 hour duration in SP mode. the title list wiI recently purchased the Toshiba DR570KU DVD - belectric_223.jpg:
This disc is now full as 2 hours of video has been recorded in SP mode. However, if you'd only recorded 1 hour in total for these 2 programmes, you would still be able to record another hour of video in SP to this disc. The additional programmes would appear between the last numbered title and the 'empty' block - until the disc is full.
The empty block is always present and you cannot 'get rid of it', but it doesn't mean the disc is full or cannot be recorded on.
Hopefully, this goes some way to explaining it, but I still need need to explain what happens with used / full discs when you want to delete programmes and re-record.
There is a maximum length for messages posted on FixYa and I may be getting close to this, so rather than break off in mid-flow, I will continue the explanation for used discs in another message below this one. I will do this right now, but it will probably take me 20 minutes or so to write part 2, so keep checking back. It will be less confusing if you hold any questions until I've written part 2, but I will be happy to answer any after that.
Regards,
BElectric

Hi,
Have not replied earlier because I have been experimentin.Yes understand what you have said and thank you for that (to me its a design fault because I see NO purpose for it apart from confusing customers).
OK well it has not solved the problem.
You mention right at the beginning about SP & LP - well according to the manual there is XP,SP,LP,EP and SLP ?? SLP having 8 hours of recording space??
That aside ,what I am experiencing is (apparently) a malfunction of the unit.
If I set the timer recording to 4hours (LP) I get just over 2 hours of a recording and this has happened several times.
So,I decided to try 'one-touch timer recording set for 6 hours - what did I get 3hrs 17 minutes ??
The whole thing is bizzare !
I have a warranty (which is amazing for this part of the world) but I really want the recorder.
I am wondering if I 'formatted' the disc incorrectly??
Well I have managed to source a brand new disc ,but this one is a DVD-RW !
Can you help me format this because - yet again ,the manual is confusing e.g. Page 38, 'DVD-RW will be formatted EITHER video OR VR mode according to the format mode of the unit??
Before you insert a brand new DVD-RW,you need to SET THE RECORDING FORMAT TO THE DESIRED MODE.
It reads as if the 'format mode of the unit'is factory set,so how do I know whether its video or VR and what is the difference, If I am reading too much into this ,and I have a choice of modes , what is the difference ? Sorry to be a pain but need to examine all the options before I return the unit.
Just need to make sure its not me screwing something up.
Look forward to hearing from you.
Hi,
I have already replied to you but as I have heard nothing more I think I replied in the wrong place.
Thank you for your explanations in very simple terms ,much appreciated.
So,if that is not the problem it must be something else.
I am thinking it is a fault with the 'timer recording' mechanism' ,because I have been experimenting;at the beginning of your reply you refer to SP &LP ,but according to the manual
the machine has XP,SP,LP,EP and SLP,allowing up to 8 hours recording space.
Now I tried 'one touch timer recording' over different perioda and what I am finding is that I will get a recording of approx HALF the time indicated by each setting?
I then discovered this also happens with 'timer recordings'.
I have a 'warranty' with this machine ,but they have no more in stock and it could be many months (if ever) before they have any more. So I want to keep the machine if possible.
I have managed to source a new DVD disc but his one is DVD-RW.
Could you help me with 'formatting' this disc, then I will know it is NOT me making a mistake that is causing these recording problems.
Again I'me not clear about the 'formatting' instructions for this type of disc ,because it seems to give you a choice (VR or Video) well,I'me not a technician and have no idea what the difference is??
Look forward to hearing from you.
Yes the solution was very helpful.
Unfortunately it clarified what I thought the THOUGHT the problem was -but the problem still exists.
How do I get further assistance because I have already replied to BElectric without further response,
I have been in touch with Fixya technical section and have been told that I should have completed this section first before
replying to the expert. So ,hopefully I can now get further assistance.
This is a reply to 'BElectric'.
Not Having much luck with technical equipment - this will be the 3rd.thime I have written my comments and asked for further assistance, but without response.
Your assistance was fine, but only highlited the fact that I was asking the wrong question.
Since your reply I have experimented with the recorder and have discovered the only constant problem is that I am only receiving HALF the recording time in each 'recording mode' and there are 5.
I cant see how its possible that the 'formatting' can be wrong, otherwise it wouldn't have formatted the disc at all (would it ?)
I have one last throw of the dice - I have actually managed to find a NEW disc, but it is DVD-RW.
Could you help me with 'formatting' this disc ,again the instructions are 'confusing', for me anyway.
If that is not the solution I can only assume the unit is faulty - which means I would have to return it,but they have no other stock !
Look forward to hearing from you.
