You can reset your Nintendo Wii video settings to use Composite (or RCA - Yellow, Red and White) cables by doing the following:

1. Make sure the Nintendo Wii is powered off and a red light is showing.

2. With the power off, unplug the video cables from the back of the Nintendo Wii, leave them plugged into your TV (these should be the RCA/Composite cables)

3. Press the Power button on the front of Nintendo Wii. Make sure the cables are still unplugged.

4. Keep the Nintendo Wii powered on and plug your cables back into it with it still running.

5. If all went well, the picture should appear normally now.

6. Once the picture has reappeared, you should go into the Nintendo Wii Menu (the Wii button in the bottom left hand corner) and change the display back to 480i to make the changes permanent.

Screen is compressed both horizional and vertical

Hi Rod,
If you can still see/read what's happening on the screen, go back to the Wii Options screen, select "Wii Settings" on the right, click the Screen option, and make sure "Widescreen settings" match your TV (if in doubt, choose 4:3). Click confirm, then click "TV Resolution" and ensure it is on Standard 480i. With these settings, the Wii should be viewable on almost any TV.

Need to change tv setting for wii game option

I had the same problem. First, I got the comp cables and set resolution to 420p\16:9 aspect. Didn't fix it. then I went into the advanced menu and turned off noise reduction and DCM (digital clear motion).

My Wii was connected to a normal-old TV and was in black and white. Okay, so I then tried to see if connecting it as a HDTV version would work (in the settings)....well, then everything turned into...

What happened when you selected HDTV is that you activated the output to the HDMI output. This turned off the regular connection. Press the power and reset button simultaneously when turning on the unit to return it to the factory default settings. Otherwise, you'll have to connect it to a HDTV with the optional cable to connect it (you'll have to purchase that as well) to go in and change the settings back.

Set to 480p now cant reset back

In the display system settings you need to set it to 60hz or 50hz instead of EDTV/HDTV. You also need to make sure you are connecting via a normal scart lead and not a component cable.

TV works, but DVD play gets no response

Since all the source switching is under control of the computer in the set, if none of the external sources comes on it's got to be the TV's fault. First try unplugging the set and giving it 5 or 10 minutes and plug it back in to allow the processor to reset. If the external stuff still doesn't show up, check all the menu options to see if anything allows you to disable them (parental lock, for example). If nothing else works, the set may need a service call.

(I'm not too familiar with this brand and don't have service information. But I have seen other brands behave this way when something messes up the control system and the computer inside doesn't know what features it has anymore. Sometimes the problem was fixed by resetting things via factory service mode, and other times the computer chip needed replacement.)

Wii black screen

The following fix should help users who do have problems with some virtual console games for the Nintendo Wii that display only a black screen after starting them while the sound remains normal. This does not work in all occasions but should work if you get the Wii menu when you press Home and works only for games that received an update for the interlaced mode.
Try out the following to see if this fixes the issue. Start the game normally until you see the black screen. Connect the Nunchuck to the Wiimote and press Home to see the menu options. Now press A + 2 + Z together which should result in a short “ping-like” sound.
This should have activated the interlaced mode. Leave the menu and you should see the normal game screen and not the black screen anymore. To change the mode again press A + 1 + Z using the same method as above
