Question about Toshiba DVR620 DVD Recorder/VCR

I recently received MAXELL DVD-R dvds as a gift. I have not been able to get these blank dvds to load so that I can record on them. I have recorded many SONY DVD+RW without a problem? I noticed that MAXELL is not listed in my manual, but they are 120 min SP and are apparently pre-formatted. Is there something I need to do in set up? Or do I find another purpose for these DVDs. Thank You.

From looking over the manual they should work in your dvd recorder. The fact that they are reformatted might be the problem. The recorder needs to formate the discs before it can use them. Try having the recorder reformat the discs before you try to record to them see if that helps at all. From the reading of customer reviews I have looked over, it seems like the DVD+R 's are easier to work with overall. If formatting them again does not work I might go out and prchase DVD's you know that work and use these for back up or burning data or videos from a computer instead.

When trying to record a home video VHS to DVD this is what I get. E-4 54040990 Cannot record on this disc. The disc is brand new.

Have you've tried cleaning the laser with a cleaning disc?

Failing this it may be worth removing the cover and cleaning the lens directly with a QTip and some lens cleaning fluid. Only use a drop and then wipe off with a clean dry QTip.

The other option is that you are using an incompatible format of blank DVDs. I've heard of people having problems using DVD-R & DVD-RW and although it is lised as being suitable for all types of recordable DVDs I belive you're best using DVD+R & DVD+RW.

The Manual states

Unable to play recorded dvds (standard 120min) on my dvd player. format issues?

toshiba is very rough and demanding with dvds ....it must be Maxell (I find dynex /memorex and panasonic works too) the speed must be 16x/8x (not 4x) and this is the killer dvd (+) or dvd( -)...i had to take many gifts back to mall and exchange...so read your manual carefully and get what baby toshiba ask for...some times we cant get that sale our players will send us back to out for the correct....hope this helps you too

Brought 5 maxell 1.2x rewritable 4.7 gb data dvd-rw tried to record a film keeps saying no disk what am i doing wrong? kind regards ken moore

if the other 4 dvds are still wrapped take it back (in exchange for 4x 4.7gb dvd-rw)...you picked up 1.2x your player maybe looking for higher speed..these recorders are very sensitive for the type of dvds it use..(i can only use maxell /panasonic + dynex (online))..cant use some of those on sale ones.....my recorder wont just eject it it rejects,,,,

Try another brand of blank dvd's a -R or +R as this is a compatibly issue

If all else fails buy verbatims as they are universal

Not all disks are compatible and you have just found this out for yourself. Stick with what works.

DVD Recorder will not format blank DVDs

I kept formatting DVD's until I got the unit to work. Mainly, it was some DVD's I had earlier problems formatting. I tried two new DVD's (Maxell DVD-RW) and they worked thus far. I truly think the unit needs to be taken to authorized service center for evaluation or minor maintenance. My suggestion is to verify the DVD's will work with unit. Try to use better quality ones like TDK or Maxell. Thanks for responding to my problem. If I have others, I will contact you.

my solution may be to never buy this companies products again as I have been having the same issue and since the machine is not been used much and since the disks worked before it really ticks me off. The suggestion noted to my issue recently really didn't seem to be valid due my above statted time period of no problems then sudden isses tends to show me poor quality of equipment by manufaturer.

FIRST HAVE THE LASER LENS CLEANED

THEN USE MEMOREX DVD-R THIS SHOULD SOLVE YOUR PROBLEM

Can't record DVDs

OK. Finally "solved" this problem. You must use the brand name "Maxell" DVD disks, 2x or 4x (maybe 8x). Do not use variable speed disks (e.g. 1x--4x) or 16x. Walmart carries these!

The DVR -RW 2x finally got mine to record. I didn't think this would work, but it did. I am still experimenting with it. Had to download (free) VLC player to get it to play on my computer. Works fine in other DVD players.

Credits to the Sears' repairman, the guy at F., and my patience!
