It seems 2 possible if your battery is power off, and charger you battery and turn it on to see if every thing will get all right. else you should to exchange the camera with the seller.

The gear linkage in the lens is seized or is out of alignment, this is a job for a camera specialist, I recommend estimate first.

Sorry about your moms camera Terry... but it sounds like it needs the lens replaced. If the lens is stuck out at an angle you can *SNAP* the inner lens section back into place if you're lucky, and it will work again like normal.

I don't know your model, but a refurb lens can usually be installed for about $75 including return shipping. You should check the replacement cost of a used camera and see which is cheaper in the long run.

Hope this helps!

If so, there is something wrong with the lens, and this how to fix camera lens error will be helpful. The lens is stuck and I am getting a lens error

The number one problem in digital cameras today is the lens, impact damage, dirt, sand, pop, water or even age can kill a lens. Once the lens is faulty your camera is usually history. The sad reality is cameras today are so cheap to buy that camera techs can no longer afford to repair when a new camera can be bought for less than $200.00.

Your lens is not responding as the cameras computer thinks it should, it may have got wet, banged, dirt, grit or sand may have got in and is jamming it, unfortunately this will mean the camera is in need of opening up for attention.

Best of luck

Canon EFS Lens question- please help!!

Make sure that the switch on the lens is set to AF. If that doesn't work, you may have a faulty lens. The EFS 18-55 is not a high quality lens.

Nikon D200 with Sigma 18-200 DC AF D lens

Yes, please turn off the camera when changing lens, make sure on the lens is on its full aperture if you are doing auto. if doest not work to make is test turn the camera on the manual mode and the lens too.
If your lens is new there should not be any problem, if you bought the lens used make sure all the points are clear not rusted. some time when lens fall of it breaks its points inside.
