When you switched cables, you mean you changed the cord running from the PS3 to the TV? HD content requires an HDMI connection from the PS3 to the TV. It is possible that when you changed cables, you replaced the PS3's HDMI cable with Component Cables which can only deliver in Standard Definition and not in High Definition (720p, 1080i and 1080p).

Well everytime we hook up the HDMI for the playstation 3 to the tv it says invalid format how do i fix this

You must make sure your playstation and your TV set are both set for the same video format (1080p, 1080i, 720p, etc.).

You can either go through all your HDTV formats until it synchs up (give each a good 20 seconds or so before moving on), or you can open the display menu for your PS/3 using a different video connection to your set (i.e. composite), setting both to match, then switching them to HDMI.

I am trying to commect to my PS3 to an LG LCD tv which supports 1080P (Full HD). but as the game starts and when i check the TV it says 720P although the game and the TV both supports full HD. Do i need...

Hello there. There's a few possibilities. First, the obvious, do you have it set to 1080P in the Display Settings options? Secondly, are you using an HDMI cable? You need to be using HDMI to play games in full 1080P. I use the component cables (The red, green and blue ones) for my PS3 and when I'm on the XMB (that's the PS's desktop so to speak) it's displayed in 1080P but games will not play in 1080P, only 720P. Any old HDMI cable will do the trick, so don't get suckered by the price if you are going to pick up a cable!

Games run on hdmi, but not Blu-ray movies

You most likely have the updated drivers. You may have to go and change a setting. I found an answer on the PS3 website that may be of some use to you. I hope this helps you: http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3&message.id=1662191 From the site: "go to bd/dvd setting and set the "108024hz" option off"
