Hi, I took my headphones (DT 770) to have a new jack put on after the old one was damaged and i (stupidly) cut it off. They are unsure of the wiring configuration and the technical info regarding the fourth wire (positive or negative etc) Is there a diagram or spec sheet I can see? Thanks

Hey benblay7. Cutting the wire was not stupid at all.

Two of the wires are ground and are tied together and soldered to the ground terminal. These should be the same color, usually a shiny copper color. The ground is negative. The tip of the plug should be wired to the left side and the center is, of course, the right.

Good luck from Detroit, MI.

I have the same problem, and the answer of goggomobil isn't enough help. These are professional headphones that have four wires, (not simple left/right signal + ground, like ordinary minijack wiring). The cable is very robust and consists of two halves. In one half there are two ultrathin wires embedded with brown and white sleeves, in the other half the colors of the sleeves are green and red. The cabling is probably meant for balanced connection. I also don't know how to connect the four wires to a minijack plug, and how to solder the very thin copper wires inside.

The original poster didn't mention that he had balanced headphones.

  • Anonymous Aug 02, 2012

If you have a pair of headphones with a 3-conductor mini plug, you definitely don't have a pair of headphones set up to be connected to a balanced headphone amplifier. Those amps will have two round jacks with three pins each or two DIN jacks.

You can wire a regular pair of headphones to a balanced amp, but you lose performance.

My DT-770 headphones work when plugged into my computer, but when plugged into my Presonus Firewire Studio with 1/4" plug, only the left headphone works. Any ideas on how to fix this? I use them...

Make sure the 1/4" plug you are using is a TRS connector, which has 3 separate partitions on the terminal plug. This looks like the following connector:
pctech1_73.jpg

If you are using a Stereo TRS connector with your headphones, and it is an adapter, make sure the input of the adapter is also stereo, and not a mono 1/8" to stereo 1/4" adapter.

Else, you may have a bad terminal or corroded/dirty terminal on your Firewire Studio.

My headphone cable is broken. How do I replace it?

Buy a good Jack to Jack cable, open your headphone, find out where the two cables are soldered, unsolder them.
Cut one end of your new cable, remove the plastic aroud the 2 wires on a small lenght and solder your new wires where the old were.

Et voila.

Hope this helps

My skull candy lowride jack has a lose wire how do i reapir it? plz help

It's probably easier to buy a new jack from an electronics supply store.
Cut the old one off and strip the ends of the wires.
Solder the wires onto the new jack. It might take a little time figuring out which wire is which.
Don't forget to put the jack cover on the wire before you start soldering.

My end of my headphones where you plug it in. has broke and i cant listen to music

If you are any good with a soldering iron you can fix it yourself. You can buy a jack plug from your local hi-fi electrical shop. With some wire cutters cut the old plug off. Bare back the cable to reveal the wires. With a sharp knife open up the old jack plug. This will show you where the wires connect to the terminals of your new plug. If it's not clear where they go, the earth wires (left & right) which are around the two coloured wires, go on the large metal lug (they are not channel specfic). Attach the first coloured wire to the smaller terminal and the other wire to the other terminal. These coloured wires are the left and right channels. If you get the wrong they can be swapped and it won't cause damage. Make certain the solder doesn't short the terminals. If the sound is tinny/spaced out, the earths are not connected right.
PS don't forget to put the cover to the jack on the cable before you fit the rest of the plug!

Loose connection in Bose headphones

Cut the ******** and replace it with a new one. You will need to solder the wires on to the new one. Keep the old one, cut it open and it will tell you which wires go to which terminal.

Wire has been cut

My wire was cut, and I made it worse trying to fix it....with several failed attempts... was becoming despondent, but gave it one last try, and was successful. First, each little tiny wire has two internal wires, one green (ground) and one gold (hot). At first, the green one looked like some fiber or filler and I cut it, connected the gold wires and nothing happened. On further inspection, with magnifying loopes, I determined the green fiber was in fact green wire. There was also a lot of clear fiber, which is insulation? filler?... I don't know, but I cut it out, leaving only the wires. From the internet, I determined that the wires had a thin layer of plastic on them for insulation, which I burned off lightly with a lighter, connected the green together, soldered it, wrapped in electrical tape, then connected the gold together, soldered it, and taped again....and to my suprise it worked. I used twist ties, and epoxy to strenthen the area and was done, my headphones are working again.

MDR-7506 - No sound on right side

It sounds like the pin cracked. If this is the case, you'll need to soldier a new jack on it. Here's how, assuming you already know how to soldier a new 1/8" TRS phono plug.

Cut and strip the cord. There should be two copper wires and (on Sony headphones, at least) a red and a green strand. On a new 1/8" jack, there should be three connections. The middle one is left, and is where the green one goes. The short one on the side is right, and is where the red one goes. The long bit is the common, and is where the copper one goes. Before you solder, however, remember which strand is which, because you have to sand or burn off the colored enamel. (Use a fine grain paper, or use a standard lighter or stick match- anything else might damage or melt the wire)

Jack replacement for mdr-v500 headphone

You don't need to look inside the plug... just open up the earcups and test the jack plug with a continuity tester.

But FYI, Red = ring, Green = tip.
