Follow the directions about when to install the usb cable.Usaually the software will ask youi to find a port and then plug in the usb.
Usually this means the cartridge is stuck or is catching when it is trying to set itself to print. On HP's its pretty normal for the other functions to work even when the printer may be broken or disabled. I've found it can be very difficult to fix this once it happens since the pieces are plastic and they often times aren't easily replaceable. If it's under warranty i would get it replaced, if not i would get a new printer.
