I have a 50 in. plasma tv (zenith). It is 3 years old. The other day while watching it we heard a loud pop. Then the screen went black. Now, you can see the picture, but the color is very dark and does not match the true colors of the images (ex. a person has a gray complexion and a pink shirt, when it is a white complextion and a burgandy shirt).
Is this something that is fixable at a reasonable cost. I do not want to spend more money fixing it than a new tv would cost. Also, is this a fluke thing or could there be a cause for this tv to go up so soon.
my 42" plasma tv made pop noise and now has no pic but does have sound.

That loud pop you heard was a capacitor on the power supply - if you have electronic experience - pull the rear panel and look for bulged/busted or leaking caps replace them if you have component level repair experience or replace the board if you do not - also dont kill yourself- tvs have enough voltage/amperage to kill humans.
I had the same thing happen a few weeks ago to my zenith 50" plasma tv. I tried to turn it back on with the remote and the power button on the set but the only thing that happened was the led would flash green 3 times and then go back to red. I took it to a repair shop and they called yesterday to tell me it was going to cost $700 to fix it by replacing the power supply. No guarantees either that it will last any longer than the 3 years I've had it for either. But it's still cheaper than replacing it with a new "bigger" tv which is what I will eventually do anyway. I've heard of people looking on ebay for repair parts and doing the repairs themselves but there is no warranty on human error...
Don't know much about the newer tv's but in the old days when they did that the guns at the back of the tube where on the way out.. my guess is the modern equivalent is happening..you need to check the vision card.
Anything is repairable as long as the screen isn't damaged.
The sound you heard is most likely was a capacitor that just went dead. Solder in a new capacitor should fix the problem. It would most likely be on the power supply board somewhere.
This just happened to my Z50 yesterday...10 days after it came back from the repair shop! The first repair was for the "popping" problem where the tv makes a loud pop and the screen goes black. This took 6 weeks to get fixed. For this new problem the repair center is getting hold of LG to find out what to do. I am also calling them because I see this is a major problem that people have been experiencing out of warranty. The first customer service rep told me I was out of luck but I am not accepting that answer. Good luck, we'll both need it.
