First before doing any work on the tv, unplug overnight so that the capacitors will discharge. Next the chips you are referring to will not be hard to find and will be located on the convergence board which can be found easily. Just follow the bulb back to the source. For replacing, you will need to know how to solder, if you don't, find someone that does as this is very important.

You can get the chips from Radio Shack, they should be STK 392-110 and the other one STK 392-150, but find them on the board first and check to make sure. I think that it may be a different problem but these are cheap and a good place to start so give it a try. You can also order these chips online at various websites. Just search for the two chips

let me know of any further questions that you may have

There shouldn't be any need to worry when buying new ones. If you found the existing ones, just match them up with the new ones. Any brand should be fine. Let me know if you still have questions with this

You would need to go through the company that makes them or through a tv repair shop to have the parts ordered.the tv should reset itself once the new board is in place

I have some distored blue color across the screen

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit from the link below.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on - TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a solution

93a1209.pngCONVERGENCE SOLUTION

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you know what you are doing. If you have never done this before we would advise calling a shop or if you want to do it yourself get a complete kit with instructions and support from www.TvRepairKits.com

Red and blue convergence wont line up. What should i do.

convergance can be tricky and you should follow a manufacturers proceedure from a manual.

most specificaly start with the green H and V Linearity and center , then the Red and Blue

Projection TV's and Component Video RGB have their Horizontal and Vertical Sync signals on the Green Component..

There may be other reasons for their specific order of operations within a calabration proceedure such as your 'RGB convergance alignment'

Adjust color, need service manual

On controlls the foucus...the other the brightness. I would not mess with them. 99% of the time the problems is one of the two listed below...

You have one of two problems. Sometimes both.

Problem #1) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

Your TV may have a convergence failure. ( common problem )

Blue convergence is off right will not adjust

Hi. there is a malfunction that has occurred within the convergence chip that is located on the PC board(demod). this is a Hybrid chip that controls the calibrations of the RGB streams. If this chip becomes unstable, it will not allow proper calibrations.

Replacing this failed chip will fix this issue.

The actual sony chip is not available at this time but, there is a compatible chip that will work with your set. i will post a link to the affected part below.

Convergence

Remove the back containing the mirror and look into the projection lenses either at low brightness or with the tv turned off using a flashlight. Look for the fluid posibly being murky (should be clear). If this is the case, to replace the fluid: 1. Unplug the TV. 2. Remove the Picture Tube with Lens Assembly that has bad fluid 3. Find the drain plug 4. Drain the fluid in the sink. 5. Take a picture from all angles to review later. 6. Dissassemble the fluid chamber from the picture tube and clean the front glass and chamber. 7. Reassemble and fill chamber with mineral oil (laxitive found in a drug store). 8. Repeat the proceedure until all three CRT images are clear. 9. Use the centering magnets located above the CRT PCB's to get the convergence in the center. 10. Use the convergence proceedure from the tv menu to complete.
