I had the same problem just 2 days ago and found that if you hold the power button down and keep it down until it powers up and powers off it will reset the game back to factory settings allowing you to reconnect to a standard television. Hope this helped.

have you checked your video and audio cord. have u tried to buy a new cord. maybe your audio and video cord is out. are you using a hd cord, or regular cord. is your tv have an hd outlet or just a regular tv that does not have hd privalages
Shelley, the fix for this is simple! Hold down the power button for about 5 seconds and the system will beep. This resets the video setting for your ps3 from HD too whatever the current cables are that you are using too hook up too the tv. This works on my PS3 which I just bought about 3 months ago and should work with the older ones.
You will need to change the display settings back to normal for a standard TV. Obviously a little tricky if it's already hooked up to the TV that won't display a picture! If you do a manual (or is it called total reset?) this should revert it back to standard TV settings. To perform the reset hold the power button down for 10 seconds (I think it's 10 anyway) or until you here a couple of beeps and it should reset the display settings to it's default.
Hope that helps? Sorry I cant be more exact on the reset details.
Shut down your PS3 then restart by pressing and holding the power button. This will reset your PS3 to its most basic 480p graphics mode so you'll be able to see enough to choose RGB SCART, component, HDMI or whatever from here.
