Cmos checksum error - defaults loaded

I am working on an older Windows 98 computer. When I turn it on, the screen shows the bios manufacturer and version number, identifies the primary and secondary drives, then posts the following error message:

CMOS Checksum Error - Defaults Loaded

Press F1 to continue, DEL to enter setup.

Pressing either key does not work, as a matter of fact the lights on the keyboard flicker, but none of the keys will work. tried pressing Cntrl-Alt-Del to reboot but nothing happens. I replaced the cmos battery with one that I know is good and get the same results. I cannot enter setup or the boot menu to diagnose the problem. I think there is something wrong with the PS2 port that the keyboard is plugged into, because I know the keyboard works in another computer.

There is only one PS2 port, the other port is a larger 5 pin port, normally used for a mouse. Could this 5 pin port also be used for a keyboard, and maybe I need a keyboard with a 5 pin plug to make the computer boot?

Or . . . am I diagnosing the problem incorrectly?

I do not have the manual, and the make and model of the computer is not known. I think it was a custom build. The only thing listed on the motherboard is MB - 8500TDU-A ver 1.1.

I will try an older keyboard.

Ports are usually labelled - look carefully.
Try manufacturers manual.
Could be that keyboard is the larger 5 pin DIN socket (old IBM AT keyboard).

Dell Inspiron 530. At start up gives CMOS checksum error defaults loaded. Options press F1, F2 or F12 computer does not react. Has new CMOS battery. RAM OK. Did CMOS clear and password reset. What else can...

When a Power Supply is plugged into power, there is a constant 5 Volts present. The 5 Volt Standby Power.

You press the Power On button.
This in turn presses against the Power On switch, located inside it's plastic assembly.

The Power On switch is a Momentary Contact Switch.
Temporary closing it activates the Soft Power On circuit.
A 5 Volt circuit that utilizes the 5 Volt Standby Power.

The Soft Power On circuit 'excites' the Power Supply, and turns it on.
(Sounds like a seedy novel)

The first chipset (Integrated Circuit) to receive power is the BIOS chipset.
The Basic Input/Output System program is initialized.

BIOS looks to see what devices are connected, does a Ram Memory count, turns the Processor on, and hands the computer over to the Operating System.

A checksum is computed as an error-detecting code, to protect the BIOS settings stored in CMOS.
Each time the computer is turned on, this number is re-computed; and checked against stored values.

If they do not match an error message is generated, to tell you the CMOS memory contents may have been corrupted; and therefore some settings may be wrong.
Your BIOS assumed the settings were incorrect, and loaded BIOS default settings; stored in BIOS.

(Default = factory settings)

CMOS Checksum Error Defaults - Loaded

New battery? Nope didn't help.
Clear CMOS, and password reset? Nope didn't help.

Leaves Virus as the problem, or hardware component/s on motherboard; are bad.

My thoughts?
Bad motherboard.

("BAD motherboard. NO,...........you know you have been bad,....don't give me that look. You're a bad motherboard."

Lol!)

That's my diagnosis.

(Unless you put the CMOS battery in upside down.
+ goes UP)

Bios rom checksum error, boot block bios vI.0

Error BIOS ROM CHECKSUM - SYSTEM HALTED.
Cause Bad Hardware
Solution Unfortunately this indicates that your computer BIOS ROM chip or Motherboard is physically bad. It is recommended that you contact your computer manufacturer or take the computer into local service center for repair.
If you wish to repair this issue yourself the motherbard will need to be replaced.
This error is not the same as a CMOS Checksum Error, which refers to corrupted values of the CMOS settings, the ones you set through the BIOS setup program. This error means the contents of the BIOS code itself are damaged.

The BIOS ROM chip on the motherboard is probably faulty. It could also be another component on the motherboard.

You should make sure that all of the BIOS settings in the system are correct, by rebooting the system, going into BIOS setup and double-checking all the values hopefully against a recent

If you have reset the CMOS memory you need to go into the BIOS setup screen and reconfigure the BIOS. To do that you need to press a key while the computer is booting. Usually F2 but can be other keys. It should tell you on the bottom of the first screen which key to press to enter BIOS setup.
If you don't know the settings the should be one for optimal defaults - use that one. You will also need to reset the time and date.
Save, Exit and re-boot and everything should then work.

This error is not the same as a CMOS Checksum Error, which refers to corrupted values of the CMOS settings, the ones you set through the BIOS setup program. This error means the contents of the BIOS code itself are damaged.

During the boot process you will see on the screen a certain key to press to enter setup
Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS you can load failsafe defaults or load optimized defaults ,press escape then press f10 to save to cmos to restart
You will also need to set the time and date

In the main or system setup screen you should be able to see the date and time Using your arrow keys navigate to the date and change the date. Once highlighted on the month, day, or year, press your arrow keys or your page up / page down keys to change the date.
hope this helps you

Getting a CMOS checksum bad error when starting my Acer M5640 Desktop with Windows 7 Thanks Daniel

Solutions to CMOS Checksum Bad Error

The CMOS Checksum Bad Error can be fixed easily by following the listed steps carefully.

CMOS Battery may not be functioning properly

If you suspect that your CMOS battery is not functioning properly, you can easily change it. Before changing your battery, reboot your computer to make sure that the error still exists. If it does, go into your CMOS and write down all of the settings. If all the settings are lost, you can usually retrieve them from your computer manufacturer. Now locate the battery and remove it, you might need to consult your computer's manual or technical support to remove your battery (the battery a flat, shiny silver colored and coin-shaped). Take down the CMOS battery's information such as volt, size, etc. Once you have your new battery, you can replace it and reenter your CMOS settings. If your battery was the cause of the CMOS Checksum Bad Error, you should have solved the problem.

Your BIOS may have been updated

If your BIOS have been updated recently, your CMOS settings may have reset. Make sure that the values entered in the BIOS are correct or simply reset them to the default settings. If you believe that a virus has updated your BIOS settings, run a virus scan and make sure that the BIOS settings are back to the default.

The Computer may not have been shut down properly

Sometimes when running MS Windows, if you shut down your computer without first properly shutting down your operating system, it will corrupt the CMOS settings causing the CMOS Checksum Bad Error. You can easily avoid this error by making sure that you completely shut down your computer properly before turning off the main power. Usually this entails going into the Start Menu, clicking on Turn Off Computer/ Shut Down. If improper shutdown was the cause of the error, you may have solved the issue.

AFTER SWITCHING ON, SCREEN STAYS FROZEN AFTER SAYING CMOS CHECKSUM ERROR- DEFAULTS LOADED

Hi there,

When starting your PC, the following error message is displayed:

CMOS wrong
CMOS MEMORY size WRONG
CMOS Checksum Bad
CMOS checksum error defaults loaded
Warning! CPU has been changed please re-enter cpu settings in the cmos setup and remember to save before quit!
You are prompted to:

Press F1 to resume
Press F2 to load default values and continue

This is due to the fact that the CMOS, which contain data related to the BIOS, has been reinitialized and that your PC has been reset to factory settings.

Solutions:

Reinitializing the BIOS
  • Change BIOS battery
    • If the problem persist this may be due to the fact that the battery powering the CMOS (when the computer is shut down allows the CMOS to store information), is depleted.
    • The CMOS battery is a small pin found on the mother board, you can refer to the manual provided with your motherboard to change it or have the nearby computer technician change it for you if you don't want to risk any damage.
    • More information with: Replacing the battery of your motherboard (CMOS battery)
Post back if it is not working we will be happy to help you.
Hope this helps.

Booting problem

There are usually three main reasons that a CMOS Checksum Bad Error has occurred. They include:
  • CMOS Battery may not be functioning properly. The battery life may have expired.
  • Your BIOS may have been updated (either by user or possibly a virus)
  • The computer may not have been shut down properly e.g. shutting off the computer's main power without first shutting down the computer (MS Windows requires you to shut down your computer before shutting off the power).

Computer not working with Samsung LCD TV

Your PC isn't working, the "CMOS Checksum Error" is a BIOS error. It has nothing to do with the monitor.
You have to let the PC load the default settings and try to boot up, if the defaults doesn't work, you have to reconfigure the options in the SETUP program. To enter Setup press "Del" or "F2" in the POST screen.
