I have a self propelled lawn mower and the the belt that propells the wheels is loose, do I need to replace it or is there a way to tighten the tension.

Cathy, there is a way to adjust belt tension on some models whether it is by the cable or a slotted bracket where the idler wheel is mounted, depends on make and model. If you have your manual check in it for belt adjustment. Could be stretched belt, stretched cable, worn/oil on pulley, seized tensioner, stretched/broken spring on tensioner, etc.

Rear wheels are locked up.

Is it a self propelled if it is the belt is jammed, has gone off track and lodged it self. look in the manual to disassemble it and replace the belt.

Pull off the back wheels and use some 3n1 to lube on that lil bar( If you have the manual it will show you).

Can't find a replacement belt for Scotts Self propelled

It should be a MURRAY part number 37X84 ( NOTE: that is read 37 "ex" 84 NOT 37 "by" 84, it is a part number not a measurement) but without knowing the exact model number of your lawnmower, I can't say for certain.

Self Propel Belt, how to replace with the new one

First I suggest you either take a digital picture or draw the belt wrap...that way you'll know how to wrap new belt. You'll need to remove both front wheels and pinion drive stubs. Slide the shaft out far
enough so you can install new belt on lower sprocket. push belt up through access opening in deck.
Then finally install the new belt..make sure to slide belt over sprocket on shaft coming out of motor block last. It might require a std. screwdriver to slide belt over edge of sprocket. Re-assy wheels etc.
If you feel like this task is too tough..just draw yourself an assy. drawing as to how it comes apart, it will be worth it when you re-assy.
