0w-40 synthetic, I get mine at auto zone. 2 quarts in, and run the machine a few seconds and check and top off with third quart if needed. You also have to prime the oil pump by pinching off the oil hose.
Sorry but your 400 flywheel will not work on a 99 Sportsman. Even if it fits on the crankshaft and over the stator the magnets may not be in the correct position for ignition timing. It will fit a 99 Ranger but that doesn't help you much. If you have any other questions let me know, Daniel.
