WORKAROUND:
Select EconoFast or Draft as the print quality setting in the printer properties. This will prevent the color cartridge from being used.
- Or -
Try another color cartridge. The color cartridge is used to print grayscale images in Normal or Best print modes, so if one color has run out, the printout will have the wrong tint. With a full color cartridge, the colors can be properly combined to create a composite black.
CAUSE:
When printing with Normal or Best as the print quality setting, the HP Deskjet 710C or 720C or 722C series printer will use the color ink to improve print quality output, even when printing a grayscale image.

Z65 Color JetprinterHow to install or change the print cartridge; Microsoft Windows 95; Microsoft Windows Me; Microsoft Windows 3.1x
Solution
Microsoft Windows 95/98/Me: (Applies to all printers)
Click Start, Programs, Lexmark Series.
Click Lexmark Control Panel.
Click Print Cartridge installation.
Depending on which cartridges you are using and which printer model you have, select Install Color Cartridge or Install Black Cartridge or Install Photo Cartridge.
Carefully remove the tape covering the printhead of the print cartridge. Important: Be sure to remove all of the tape. Do not touch the copper area on the back of the cartridge.
Insert the print cartridge into the print cartridge carrier.
Push the cartridge back until it clicks into place.
If the print cartridge moves loosely in the carrier, it is not locked into place. Repeat step 7.
Click the appropriate Cartridge Installed option in the printer software.
If you choose to install a new print cartridge, you will be prompted to align your print cartridges. The printer will print a page with a bi-directional alignment pattern. Follow these steps to align the cartridges:
On the printed test page, locate the number under the Bi-directional Alignment pattern that comes closest to forming a straight line.
Enter the number as the Bi-directional Alignment setting in the Alignment Cartridge screen.
I changed the black cartridge with the color cartridge.
Then when I have a letter to print, I change change (or write) the letter text to yellow, red or blue.
Then I can print out a letter.
By printing the text as yellow, red or blue the cartridge will try to print with only 1 color, but will print out black.
If you do not use one of these primary printing colors the out put will be unusable.
you might not like it, but here it is, it is the truth
Epson ink jet printers require all of the ink cartridges to have ink in them in order to print any color, black and white, or grayscale images. Epson printers contain a permanent print head that needs to be charged with all colors to work. Even when users are printing black text only, a small amount of color ink is used to keep the print head charged for color printing and prevent air bubbles from entering the color print nozzles which can damage the print head. Therefore, once one of the cartridges are expended, the printer signals you to replace the cartridge in order for printing to continue.
Usually black is provided by the black cartridge only. You might be able to setup the printer through the control panel using black and white printing until the color cartridge is replaced. That might turn the color cartridge off allowing you to print.
Yes, this printer has fixed printheads and must have ink in each color to prevent damage to the printheads. Even when printing black only each color is spit in the servicing area to keep the printhead unclogged.

if you look at the options in the printer there should be an option to use the color cartridge to print black. How does this work? Well what the printer will do is mix all three colors to make a light black. This will eat up your color cartridge faster but is useful when you are out of black ink and you need to print
