You can loosen the tension on your bobbin some. Be careful not to loosen too much. You do this by turning the screw counterclockwise. Also your needle may have a snag on it. occasionally, a needle can be bad.

It's quite possible the breaking thread is due to misthreading. AVOID using old or bargain bin thread!

Remove all the thread from the machine.
Make sure you are using a brand new needle.
ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread from the beginning.
Set the top tension to the midway point.

Make sure the bobbin is wound uniformly and that no threads are sticking out beyond the bobbin. Thread the bobbin in the bobbin case and install it back into the machine. (Note: most machines, the bobbin will turn clockwise in the bobbin case when you pull on the thread tail.)

Why would that thread break?

Hello, Pat -

Which thread on your sewing machine are you referring to? With either the top thread or the bottom (bobbin) thread, the problem is most likely due to the tension.

Another reason for the top thread breaking could because the machine is not threaded correctly.

If you have the owner's manual for your sewing machine, check it for the settings for the top thread tension and for the correct threading. Also, check the manual for information on the bobbin (bottom) tension.

This web page gives some generic information on sewing machine tensions:

Another option is that you are using old cotton thread to sew with. Over time cotton thread deteriorates and breaks easily. I only know this from personal experience. :)

My Bernina 1090 keeps breeaking the bottom thread. It sews about 10 inches and breaks. I take out the bobbin and rethread and it sews a while but still breaks. I have had it in for service 3 times and...

Assuming your bobbin tension is not too high, make sure the bobbin case is clean on the inside - use a cotton bud to clean it out. Are you using good quality Bernina bobbins - if not you're on a hiding to nothing ! It is possible that the bobbin case is deformed, but most likely your service man has set up the tensions too high ... look for someone else !

Tension is too tight unable to loosen cotton breaks Maybe needs a service??

Before you do anything else unthread and rethread the machine again. Sometimes the thread gets hooked on something or wrapped around and will cause it to break. Of course do check the tension again too. Is it breaking when you pull on it before it goes through the needle?

If it is breaking when sewing then it could be that the bobbin tension is too tight.

Have you checked not only the top tension but also the bottom (bobbin) tension? Top tension is usually a lever wheel etc on the machine (depending on model). To tighten the bobbin tension you need to tighten the small screw on your bobbin casing.

I don't suppose it could be as simple as this?

The thread in the lower looper breaks frequently I spend more time threading than sewing

Try replacing the needle. It may be bent. I use polyester/cotton thread in the bobbin as it is stronger and resists breaking. A loose or a tight adjustment on the bobbin holder can also cause breaking. Check with a service shop for this one if you are not familiar.
