MY SUMSUNG DVD writer octo edge is not reading some CD and not reading DVD at all.

make sure that the dvd rw is getting enough power test all leads that are attached to the dvd rw including electrical extensions and make sure they have a secure connection or just replace them there might be bad/faulty or
you might have to physically unplug the leads for this cdrw/dvd rom then plug them back in this should activate the found new hardware wizard or
you might have to uninstall then restart your computer then reinstall your DVD/CD or uninstall the driver then reinstall for this device
click start control panel administrive tools,computer management,device manager scroll down cd dvd rom drives right click you will have options to update driver,roll back driver,or
select properties general troubleshoot, select driver click to reinstall drivers click update driver or uninstall then reinstall
if your computer came with a motherboard disc the drivers could be on it
your drivers may have been corrupted or you might have a virus run your antivrus program

your CD ROM is combo drive which means you can read and write cd but only read dvd you will have to by DVD writer which is normally with all DVD rom

I m using samsung octo edge dvd writer in nero i m unable to find write dvd option How can i write/burn dvd plz help!
To use "Burn DVD video files" in Nero, you have to switch on Advanced mode instead of standard.

In my version, this is what the bottom right corner of Nero StartSmart Essentials looks like in the two modes.

Samsung dvd rw with octo edge dvd rom says burning failed for dual layer disc
I will presume that you do not have a combo DVD.
If you have a "combo" drive, it doesn't burn any DVDs.

First, has the burner ever burned dual-layer DVD's successfully?
Radio Shack has a laser cleaner ($13). Read & follow the directions. It is an audio CD with a row of brushes. No chemicals involved.

Recommendation:
Use Verbatim DVD's, they are the best. Samsung is also a top brand.

Is you burner a dvd writer? FYI only dvd readers and writers can read dvd's . CD writers can't read dvd's.

Cannot backup files to a cd/dvd
we may need more details but you can try this for now

1. are you sure you have a cd writer or a dvd writer (writer = burner)--- check the front edge of your cd/dvd unit and look for words like "writer" "burner" or writeable next to the word dvd or compact disc... keep in mind not all cd/dvd writer can write (burn) cd or dvds, some may burn cd but not dvds.

2. is your cd/dvd unit compatible with the media (cd or dvd blank disk) you are trying to use.. depending your cd/dvd especifications your dvd/cd drive is compatible with certain types of cd or dvds that are writeable.

3. is the cd/dvd a writeable cd/dvd and is compatible with your cd/dvd drive? for instance.. if you are using a blank dvd and your cd/dvd drive only burn cd/s and read dvd and cd you won't be able to write to the blank dvd.

4. are you trying to burn a dvd in a corporate computer.?? as a user (not an administrator) of your corporate computer you may not have priviledges that will allow them to burn dvd/cd's even you your drive and your media are compatible.

Dvd rom detecting problem
You need to find what DVD reading and CD and also DVD burning software you had, then download versions of the programs compatible with Win 98--then they should work fine. Your CD/DVD drives will be ignored until you get the correct burning software installed. Go t Samsung, which hopefully will have the appropriate downloads for Win98. If Samsung no longer has what you need, find any software for Win98 such as Roxio, or hopefully freeware, and you should be back in business.
