The drives in these units are pretty standard SATA or PATA drives.
Personally, to retrieve data in these situations, since it's the USB converter board that is likely damaged, I open up the box and take out the drive, and put it into a PC that's running MACDrive (software that lets a PC use a MAC formatted drive)
You may however simply be able to get another external drive enclosure (about $20 USD such as THESE) and put the drive into it and be up and running again on the MAC with the old drive in the new enclosure.

Externe hardrive not working

Check the cable and power supply to the external drive. Has it been format for your OS? What type of interface, i.e. USB, Firewire, SATA, etc.
Goto Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager.
See if the interface for the external drive is shown and working.
Open "Computer Management Console" and select "Storage". Do you see the external drive?

My hardrive "simpledrive" model 96300-41001-156

The external storage device has several major components:

* USB cable

* external power-supply

* disk-drive inside the enclosure

* USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

Try a different USB cable.
Try a different USB port on your computer.
Try a USB port on a different computer.

Take a multi-meter, and measure the output voltage/amperage of the power-supply,
and compare with the specifications on the label of the power-supply.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and attach it as a "slave" drive in a desktop computer, to see if bypassing the USB-to-disk-drive adapter bypasses the problem.

Look at the label on the disk-drive, for manufacturer, product-number, serial-number, and manufacture date. Access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status" to see if the warranty still is valid. If so, the drive can be replaced, at minimal cost to you.

Buy a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Search online for a professional "data recovery service". For a significant fee, they can repair your disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your files to a new disk-drive.

External hardrive not beinfg recognized. After usb cord was unplug then re-pluged in.

Shut down your computer and unplug the device. Then turn your computer back on, log in, wait for it to finish loading, then connect the drive and turn it on.

Power supply flashes green and no lights on laptop

Remove battery pack, press and hold power button for 5 seconds, then put battery pack back in and restart pc. This should take care of it. A bad memory stick can cause problems like this as well.

My WD Elements 640GB Wont turn on.

I had the same problem. I fixed this by leaving the power supply connected with the wall socket for about 15 minutes, without connecting it to the external hdd. After that I connected the power supply with the external hdd and it worked perfectly. I hope this helps for you too!

Maxtor personal storage 3200 - flashing green light.

Solution:
First, disconnect the power cable from the back of the external hard drive:
If the power supply LED continues to blink:
  1. Connect the power supply to a different outlet (or instead of connecting to a power strip, connect directly to an outlet in the wall).

  2. If the power supply continues to blink after changing outlets, this indicates that the power supply is defective and needs to be replaced.

  3. If the power supply stays solid, then reconnect to the external hard drive and see if the drive spins.

You could buy another drive with the same specs and replace the circut underneath the drive with the circut from the new drive, then try it in your new enclosure

External hard drive wrong power supply was plugged in

The power circuits in the external hard drive enclosure may have burnt out or the fuse may have blown. Its unlikely your hard-disk is itself damaged.
You may remove the actual hard-disk from the enclosure and put it in another and access the data.
All the best!

I have a rock mobile 3.5" mobile drive model #hd2-u2

I beleive you may have damaged the HD itself. The case only contains the lights, and the power supply.
The only other way to test it would be to take it out and install it on your desktop as a slave to see if it comes up.
i feel fro you I also had an Ultra external HD 60G and burnt it by using the wrong ac adapter.
