My mum's computer monitor stopped working after a power cut. When she went to turn it on there was a burning smell coming from the back and the screen stayed dark although the green monitor light stayed on. The computer works ok with a different monitor so I think maybe a fuse or something has gone in the monitor itself? I know nothing about computers but was wondering if this was possibly the case and if it was an easy job to fix? How do you fix it yourself if it is just a blown fuse?

Strange hissing sound and smell comes from the monitor

Whenever you experience an unusual smell coming from anything electrical, always turn it off and/or disconnect it from any power source until you learn more about the problem. A fire can make make any problematic device seem suddenly unimportant.

10_24_2012_3_24_03_pm.jpg

An extremely common component in nearly any electronic device is a capacitor. The sizes vary from baby-tooth-sized to bowling-ball-sized found in the power box for most photography studios. The hissing sound is likely caused by one of these. The noisy capacitor may be going bad or another component or an electrical short may be causing it to get too much power. I've attached a video of what happens when capacitors get too much power.

An electrical short could also be causing both symptoms. If the smell is similar to burning organic matter, you likely have an insect (a crispy critter) that can be removed to remedy your problem. However, an electrical burn usually releases gases from burning rubber or plastic and has a distinctly different type of odor. If that's the smell and you are handy with a soldering iron, remove the cover to your monitor and look for signs of burning or overheating. Otherwise, the task should be left to an electronics shop for repair.

Dell monitor screen suddenly went white. Can it be fixed?

I have a strong suspicion that you have burned a capacitor or two on the monitor. You will need to bring this in to have it serviced as it will require the monitor to be opened up and new capacitors replaced/resoldered.

Computers won't turn all the way on

If the cpu were damaged, you would still get something at boot.

Smell your power supply? Do you smell arcing or burning. If so, it may be your power supply. You can get a power supply tester for about $20. The power supply has several different voltages that it supplies. So, the system might seem to be on but not really.

Depending on the size of your system, you can get a power supply for between $20 and $125.

I am willing to bet that it is the power supply. A cheap power supply can easily burn out.

One of two monitors went blank. When I turned it

The problem can be the inverter board or worst case will be the lamps, you need to have spare lamps for testing, that is how I narrow down the problem to find out if the inverter is bad or bad lamps. see example here: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums

Gateway fpd2275w monitor is making a burning smell

Your monitor is broken. If it is still under warranty see if you can send it back to phillips. If it isn't you will problably have to get a new one. This problem may have been caused by a liquid getting into the monitor.

My monitor is still working but has an odor coming out of the vent holes of back cover. This is a Fuji 19" LCD Monitor (Model: FP-988D) abut 2 years old. All features still seem to work but I have...

It is normal for computer monitors to run hot and smell out
of the vent holes. The question is how much and how bad.

Under-sized power resistors on the circuit board often smell
like burned toast, this is normal. If the smell is very irritating
and "aromatic" like burned varnish, however, causing your nose
or eyes to burn, than the cause is probably due to an overheated
transformer and failure will occur eventually (soon)

(Transformers are made of a spool of wire, insulated with
Varnish. When overloaded or shorted inside, they stink)

If you see smoke, stop using it. Otherwise you have nothing
to loose, since nobody fixes monitors anyway, but keep an
eye on it to make sure it does not cause a fire. Always plug
your monitors into a power bar with its own fuse or breaker.

Finally if the monitor does to catch on fire, the more the
merrier, since most dealers and manufactures are much
more likely to give you a new one, when you rave and rant
about a lawsuit for almost burning your house down.

The best time to get warranty is during a sale on Saturday
afternoon !!!

More realistically, if the monitor does catch on fire, shut off
the power bar, real fast. Then unplug it and throw it in the
Bathtub :)
