You don't. There's no place to oil ANY ceiling fan, not just the Hunter line. All ceiling fans use sealed ball bearings in the motors. They are lubricated for life. If you're experiencing a squealing noise, it would be best to take it down, pack if up and take it back where you bought it. No ceiling fan should squeal, let alone one as expensive as a Hunter.

If you have a Hunter Original fan (the expensive cast brass units) you MUST oil your fan.

The top of the line Hunter 'Original' fans utilize an oil bath system that requires 10W NON-detergent oil in the oil cup.

Here is a YouTube video about what happens to Hunter Originals when they aren't oiled:

    Good luck from Detroit, MI.

What to do if fan is frozen up

You need to put some Hunter oil then push the blades around by hand to get the bearings lubed. Then check oil level and add more oil if necessary.

A customer of mine has a very nice Hunter original ceiling fan that she never oiled and now the fan just hums and wont spin. Is it possible to repair after no oil damage is done?

Put some oil in and turn blades by hand to lubricate the bearings. If the motor is frozen, then you would have to take it to a service center or send back to Hunter for repair.

How to oil a standing Hunter fan

If the fan does not have 3-in-1 oil'r cap located near each end of fan, then lay fan down so blades are up. Then use WD40 with straw to spray on the turning shaft and let oil drip down for several hours.
You cannot over-oil a turning shaft, so plenty of WD40. Just be careful because air mist from WD40 is harmful to breathe and vapor is extremely flammable, so no smoking while spraying.

Is sewing machine oil the same weight as ceiling fan oil?

No!

First, how old is this fan, and secondly is it exhibiting symptoms of low oil? If it is, just adding oil is not enough, you should change the oil in it, by removing the fan, placing paper towels (lots of them) around the part which the blades attach to and turn the fan over dumping the oil into the paper towels.

If it is not having problems and you just want to top it off, use either the Hunter fan oil, or a product called "Zoom Spout Oiler" Both are a 10wt Turbine oil. I have also used 5w20 engine oil in these fans with no ill effects, but I don't recommend it.

If you have any more concerns, don't hesitate to ask.

Here's the manual to your fan.

I purchased the hunter outdoor fan about 3 years ago. All three of them are leaking oil. What is the problem?

Might be overfilled on oil. Oil should be only 1/2 " from the top of the reservoir. also check that the reservoir tank is on tight. Note (Left land treads).

New Hunter fans installed, they operate for a period of time and then shutdown. Some time later they can be switched on from the power source. Is there an internally installed thermal device which shuts...

Howdy,

Assuming these ceiling fans are infact the 23827 Hunter Original, did you put the bottle of oil which came with the fan in them? The Hunter original requires this bottle of oil for lubrication. If you had them installed, the installer may have not put the oil in.

with the motor/s off, spin the blades. Do they spin for a long time, or do they come to a stop quickly? If these fans were just installed, the biggest likelyhood is that the bearings are seizing from lack of lubrication.

The oil hole may be on the switch housing, as in this .pdf http://www.hunterfan.com/uploadedFiles/Support/Owner_Manuals/41556.pdf

Or it may be on top of the fan, as in this .pdf http://www.homedepot.com/catalog/pdfimages/52/527f2153-5314-45aa-8cd1-310b94adc671.pdf

Check/add oil to a hunter ceiling fan

If you are asking for instructions on checking and possibly adding oil to a Hunter Original fan. Here are instructions:

Check oil level immediately after filling the reservoir. To check oil, bend an ordinary pipe cleaner into a 1/2" long hook and dip it into the oil reservoir.

If oil touches the end of the pipe cleaner, the fan has ample oil. If it does not touch, add SAE 10 non-detergent oil slowly until it touches the pipe cleaner.

-Hunter Original fans rarely/ never need oil unless they were relocated or tipped. ...Or if the fan was improperly installed.

-Hunter sells an oil refill / oil level check kit with good instructions. They also sell a relocation kit that includes the same kit plus all mounting hardware needed.

Good Luck!
