Check BIOS Hard Disk is not set to AHCI - this is not supported by XP
In your bios there should be a section that says ide click on that that gives you the option to find the harddrive if this fails you may have to add the parameters of the harddrive which is listed on the harddrive ie cly, sectors, mb, ect ect if none is listed try to remove the cable from the harddrive and if there is more than one connection try the other connection one end is the master and one is the slave and try to reboot if still nothing than remove the cable from the cd rom and try to plug the hard drive in there and see what happenes cables connections get easily placed on the wrong device ie the harddrive and harddrive i know this sounds complicated but it is not really that hard please let me know what happnes ok good luck !!!!
Also - if it is telling you to install a hard drive - then your bios is not reconizing that you have a hard drive installed. Go into your Bios to see if your hard is listed. if not - you need to open your computer to make sure all the connections are correct. if this doesn't work, you may have to buy a new hard drive.
