Question about GE Dishwashers

Open Question

Dishwasher not cleaning glasses

Can you tell me what else I can try to get my glasses clean in the upper rack of my GE Profile Dishwasher--model #: PDW7880JD1SS. The sprayer under the glasses doesn't seem to be spinning, and if it is, not enough. I have all kinds of crud inside my glasses. I've checked to make sure the holes in the sprayers are clean, that it spins freely and that the dishwasher is level. I use Cascade granuals and we have good water pressure in our faucets.

New and recent problem, glasses, coffee pot, etc., the inside of containers, are not getting clean, irrespective of them being loaded on top or bottom. I've changed detergents and there's been no improvement. If I wash several times using vinegar, they do come out clean.

Normally when you have low water pressure and/or cleaning issues, this an indication of a clog in your main wash pump. You will need to remove the lower spray arm and the coarse screen to get to the main wash pump sump. Inspect the impeller area of the pump. This area is usually where accumulations of debris collect and keep the pump from pulling enough water. Things like orange seeds, lemon seeds, bottle cap liners, chicken bones, and jar labels are just a few of the items I have personally found. Although, dishwashers do a good job at removing most food particles, they are not garbage disposals. I bet you will find a clog in the sump somewhere. Let me know if this helps.

Check to see in you have enough water in tank. The dishwasher fills then recirculates this water under pressure. If you have water in tank, listen to see if motor is running or not. If it is, you may have clogged jet holes in the wash arms.

SOURCE: dishes not washing clean

check water level in machine
may be not filling enough and the wash pump is starved from water thus not pushing water to upper arm
drain water from machine dismantle and clean out air tube to pressure switch take off air tube at pressure switch and blow back into sump then pinch air tube with fingers to stop air from flowing back up tube then refit to p/s
run and see if that solves problem

SOURCE: not enough water pressure to move upper arms or clean dishes

Recommend you pull the bottom spray arm straight up, then out of the DW.
Remove 9 phillips screws that hold the filter shroud down. Remove the filter and clean/rinse it out.
While the filter it out, grab a flashlight and inspect all over the sump area. Especilly in the area the has the check valve that rotates (Vario motor-driven) to feed the water pressure either to the lower and then the upper arms. Watch out for broken glass! Also, inspect the impeller to see if it is undamaged and spins easily.
Reassemble, then test out.
If problems remain, the the wash pump motor is probably the culprit. Do you get any error messages on the time display?
Good Luck!

Check the pump out. Even though the Hose is and tubes are clear it does not necessarily mean that the pump is not pumping water to the top sprayer. One way you can do this is take off the upper spray tube and lay it in a glass or bowl and turn on your machine for a minute or so to get the water flowing if it flows then I would take off the spray assembly itself and make sure that there is no blockage on the bearing race

Cleaning screens is part of regular use of the dishwasher and how to should be included in the user guide. If you don't have one look for it on the internet by searching for user manual for your model number which can be usually found on the side of the door or frame where the door closes. Good luck.

Dishes in top rack not getting clean

If you live in an area with 'hard' water (having more than 5 ppm) you may require a whole-house treatment system to eliminate the mineral content that will wreak havoc with any water-related system (including your water heater).
If that is not the case I would have a service call to check the upper level service arm, which must be pushed in to a hole in the back of most units in order to get the water to flow in.

I would suggest you buy some CLR and run it through a full heavy cycle with the washer empty. Be sure to put it in all dispenser areas and sprinkle about 1/4 cup into the washer before starting.
