Hi,
Symptom shows that TV needs Lamp replacement.
Sony TV Lamp is available in Part Store and lamp replacement procedure is written in user manual of TV.

You have an open thermal fuse in the lamp housing. The fuse has an upgrade and is only accessible from the back of the TV>

Part number for this model (2004 model) is: A1606-034B ---IT IS ALSO CALLED A XLU2100U and retails from Sony for $200 although you may be able to find it on the internet for less.
First: have the set turned off and then unplug:
The front grill under the screen has to be removed; you will find on either side on the back a single plastic black wheel you can back out by hand.
The front grill pops out(they do not come out gently) start on one side and pop it out from the pegs that hold it in.
Behind the grill is a plastic door marked and held in with a screw. Remove the the door and you will see the square black cartridge with a handle----it is secured in place by two allen bolts that you back out until they are free. grasp the handle and the lamp will pull out(a new lamp from sony comes with the allen wrench included.
MAKE SURE YOU GET A ORIGINAL SONY LAMP--the generic ones on the internet are no bargain.

This model also has a paper filter for the Optic block that should be changed. No one ever said anything about it. shortens the life of the optic block if not changed.

Wow, old post. I asked this question almost 7 years ago. So it turned out that the bulb we had just purchased had a short. We replaced it on the off chance that was the problem and viola it worked.
