I would suspect your USB drivers. Go into device manager and remove (uninstall) any device under the USB heading. Reboot and see if it works better. Also I would try the drive on another computer to make sure it is working find and try a different USB cable just in case.
I would first plug it in to a different PC, this will tell you if the problem is the Lacie or Windows Vista.
if it works on a different PC then remove it from Device manager or go to the Lacie website for Vista updates.
If it does not work on a different PC then there are 3 possibilities
1. the drive got cleared data lost
2. the enclosure is bad (I would bet on this)
3. the drive is bad
purchase a USB enclosure, remove the drive and install it in the new enclosure plug in and test.
there is not enough power coming through ports each device re-quires 1-5 volts to run and if your mac has not got enough power to boot all devices then sadly all things pluged into will not reconise and with mac the os is not properly designed for it now if you got yourself an external usb 2.0 hub powered then yes all devices will be seen in mac windows firewire is unsafe at moment for this to happen ask them what system they had had configuration on.
hope this has helped
