Ok my friend gave me a hp Compaq d330.I had to add a hard drive to it.I plug it in and it beeps 5 times so I tried to turn it off at the button and it would not work so I unplug it and pluged it bac

Five beeps indicates a memory error. If you have the desktop case rather than the minitower, you may have dislodged one or more memory DIMMS during your HDD replacement. Remove and replace all DIMMS and try again.

Computer shut down and red light flashing five times then three second pause and repeats

According to the troubleshooting guide for this model, the red light flashing five times indicates a problem in the RAM (memory), before the video subsystem is ready. You may just need to open the case and make sure the memory sticks are fully locked in their slots. If you just added new memory, it might not match the required specs.

Blank screen and the power LED flashes Red five times, once every second, followed by a two second pause, and the computer beeps five times. (Beeps stop after fifth iteration but LEDs continue flashing.)

Cause Pre-video memory error.

Solution
1.
Reseat DIMMs. Power on the system.

2. Replace DIMMs one at a time to isolate the faulty module.

3. Replace third-party memory with HP memory.
4. Replace the system board.

I have compaq 530 tower which when I switch on gives 5 short beeps, I have checked the connections as advised and they seem ok, looking on net it says 5 short beeps could be prob with CPU, what is CPU.

5 Short Beeps
Your motherboard is complaining. Try re-seating the memory and rebooting. If that doesn't help, you should consider another motherboard. You could probably get away with just replacing the CPU, but that's not too cost-effective. Its just time to upgrade!
