When I attempt to power up my Sony PCG-8J2M the power on light comes on plus the next two lights glow orange, if I pull the battery this state remains until I cut the power. I have tried removing the HDD , this has no effect.Nothing on screen and no fan running. Any help would be welcome Regards Brian

I find it hard to comprehend the reasoning behind the 'help' you have just given me to my problem, to suggest it is something to do with the video board seems far to way out for me, seems more like a power problem or main board. Anyhow I have carried out the instructions to no avail, nothing on monitor no fan or disk noise.Just noticed that holding down power switch will not kill lights.

    Regards
    Brian

Welcome to Fixya

Sound like you have a video card problem. Try to drain first the electorstatic charge of the board. Take out the battery and unplug the power adapter from the computer. Press and hold the power button for 10 secs. Put everything back and tun ON the computer. If same thing happens, try to use an external monitor. If the computer has VGA port, you can use regular LCD screen to your laptop. If still no display then its gonna be the video card is having the problem.

Thank you for using Fixya!

the battery and the power adapter should be unplgged from the unit inorder to drain the electrostatic charge of the board. If draining the electrostatic charge of the board will not work then its gonna be a motherboard problem or power problem.

1st leave the battery out,
then power only with AC power pack
push power for 10seconds and releases.

the batteries are bad, as more are, in the wild. most.

How to remove BIOS password sony model PCG-3E2L

Remove the CMOS battery

If you attempt to pull the battery, make sure that you have all other sources of power disconnected (AC power and notebook battery). Keep the battery out for about five minutes before reassembling the laptop.

Plugged it in and there is power going to the computer (orange batter light is flashing) but the green power button is not lit and the computer is not booting up. I should not need the battery if plugged...

You're correct. The laptop should power up when connected with AC adapter with or without the battery being installed. If you still have no power, the power supply on the laptop may be bad.

Hello, SONy Pcg-FRV37,Power problems

Clean the metal contacts on the Battery and in the compartment. Then, reset the BIOS to its default settings.
Next, plug in the AC Adaptor to charge the Battery.

If the issue persists then the problem may be related to the power circuitry.

My Laptop does not turn on.

That orange light is usually an indication that the battery is not working properly. If you turn the computer on and take the battery out and put it back in it the yellow light might turn off. There is another indication that you have something in the power settings that might need to be set properly. Check in the control panel>power settings and see if the battery and power settings are okay. Also, sometimes the mute on the volume might be on. Lastly, I had a laptop that never turned on and when the hardrive was taken out and the power was turned on it still did nothing until it was turned off and the harddrive was put back in then turned on again.

Sony Viao Display Problem

Sounds like you have some internal issues going on with this Laptop! If you are getting the same response when you connect an external monitor, then you more than likely have a few things going on here: A bad VGA port for starters, Issues with the Data card, and your graphic card is cetainly not helping. In addition you may want to check appropriate drivers as they are sometimes updated! But my best guess is that you are having issues internally! That could be costly! Sorry!
