Scanner crisis Everytime I scan, I always get a nice big portion of my scanner bed in BLACK. How can I fix this?

  • josh4mai Aug 09, 2008

Every time I scan, I always get a nice big portion of my scanner bed in BLACK.

The whole scanner flatbed will only scan like this. I can only fit a
small wallet size portrait on the left side but even that, it is still
poor quality. Please help me! Thank you!

I searched HP.com but they don't have anything like this on their Customer Care site (or I don't know how to search for it successfully). I'm going to take a stab at it anyway, but it's just a guess. It sounds like a mechanical problem, with the scanning arm not moving all the way across the scanning bed.

The white area of your graphic probably describes the area where the scanning arm moves. I know the light is bright, but have you tried running a scan with the lid up, so you can see how far the scan actually moves?

Assuming this is the correct problem, your only option would be to have the device serviced so the fault can be repaired. If it's under warranty, that should work out OK. If not, you have to balance the cost of a repair against replacing the entire All-in-One unit.

Good luck.

I have never used the scanner portion, I have always just used the printer..but now I need the scanner for my job. How do I use the scanner? How do I access it? Help please.

your scanner bed is the same one for photo copies.

insert medium to be scanned in the same way you would place somthing in for copy.

then on your pc you should be able to use the scan funtion it should show up as a device or be in the functions list for your printer.
once you see it you can define where the finised scans should be stored, e.g. my pictures etc.
and in which format and size. usually you can have a preview of the scan and view it to see that the image is in the correct place etc.

I hope this was useful.

I have the message "Unlock scan head" when I turn the screw to the left to unlock it, I get the same message. Is there anything else I should be doing?

If you receive this error even after unlocking the scanhead xerox suggests replacing the scanner assembly. Item Inc offers this part on exchange for much cheaper then xerox. Here's a video to show you how to fix this error/replace the scanner.">

Uneven black border showing up on scanned documents

Most scanners scan the whole "bed" not just the document lying on it. Where no part of the document covers the bed usually appears as black.

Normally when scanning you are offered and option whether to scan the whole document or a portion thereof. When previewed, a dotted line appears around the portion the scanner thinks you want, you have to re-arrange that box so that it lies just within the part or the document you require.

Should this not resolve the issue the menu options on
the left hand side of the Xerox web page should guide you to a resolution.

When I am faxing to someone my outgoing fax comes through with a line running down the middle. How can I fix this?

Hi. Try to open the cover for the scanner bed. You'll see 1 big glass and 1 small strip of glass on the left side. The big glass is used for scanning using the scanner bed. The small strip is used when paper is going through the feeder. Wipe the glasses thoroughly with a soft cloth. Hope it's just a dirt that's causing the problem. Good luck!

Lines when scanned

The common solution on this sight to this problem on any copier seemed to be simply clean the glass. I first cleaned the glass on the bed...no help. Then I lifted the feeder and discovered a portion of the glass under that as well. Once it was cleaned the lines disappeared!

I saved $$ on a useless service call for a simple, easy to fix problem thanks to this site!
