Question about Dishwashers

1 Answer

Dishwasher kenmore 665.

I checked the capacitor wiring - OK.
I pulled the motor to see if anything was obstructing it. Problem is I don't know what it should look like. pulling the motor was easy. one screw and it twisted right out. the shaft on the motor may have disintegrated. not sure. the tip of it looks like a sharpened pencil.

There is a round plastic cover that covered the entrance to the inside of the housing. I pried it out, it has a heavy O ring around it. the pieces on the inside fellout, to not sure of the order. but there is what appears to be an impeller which also has a shaft just like the one coming out of the motor, that looks like a sharpened pencil. the other end of this impeller has a little white ratchet that looks like a large version of the ratchet you find inside a ball point pen. It appears that the end opposite the ratchet is broken.

there is a pn on what is probably the impeller, but it's worn too much to make out. there's also a pn on the round cover that housed the impeller. don't know if that helps any: 8531019

How do I hook up wires on capacitor start capacitor run Magnetek 5HP 208/230v motor without a diagram?

Don,
Do you have the model number of that motor. Don't do anything till you get the information because that would be a catastrophe if you get it wrong

Duo-Therm compressor does not turn off

I think you checked voltage across the run capacitor, the brown and white wires. The voltage to the motor would be on the black and white wires And inside the motor, a thermal protection device opens the black wire, leaving no potential voltage to the other voltage line nor capacitor line ( brown and white are the same line).
The solution, varify that the motor is wired correctly, then that the capacitor value is correct, not weakened, that the motor vent holes are not blocked or obstructed, that the motor amps are not exceeded, that the motor bearings have no side play and not worn.
Before replacing the motor, make sure the wiring is correct, the motor and capacitor are not good.

Wiring- Connecting wiring on replaced fan motor

Your new fan motor should have a diagram with it or at least printed on the side of the motor, that will help a lot from your end. As for me, I don't know what unit you have, so I will try to help you with just the basics.

Your old motor probably had 3 wires. One went to the contactor, that is the "Line Voltage", one went to the Common terminal on the old capacitor (COM), that's the other "Line Voltage" wire, and the last one went to the "FAN" terminal on the old capacitor. The reason the old capacitor looks different is because it works for both the compressor and the fan motor (split capacitor). You still need this hooked up for the compressor to work.

The new fan motor.
These vary in brands and wiring so I can not tell you the colors without knowing exactly which motor you have. On the new motor wiring diagram, you should see the "Line Voltage" as described above that 2 of the wires are ran to each other (just on the diagram, not wired together on the unit). This is your power wire that goes to the contactor on the unit, usually black, and your Common wire that runs to the capacitor. You can still run this wire (COM) to the common terminal on the old capacitor since you still have to use the old capacitor for the compressor and the common terminal should still be jumper-ed from the contactor to the (COM) terminal. Then you will probably have 2 wires for the new capacitor, usually Brown and Brown/White. These wires run to each side of the new capacitor and doesn't matter which terminal. Then you will take a new jumper wire from the (COM) terminal on the old capacitor to the terminal on the new capacitor that has your Brown/White lead. Make sure you secure the capacitors inside the unit so not to touch anything surrounding them. Your new motor might also be a "Reversible" motor that has reversing wires also. Again, your new motor diagram can tell you how to hook these up. You have to have it spinning the right way, most of the time it is CCW (counter-clockwise).

I'm sorry I can't be any clearer on this, but without knowing the brands, models, etc, I'm in the dark. If you need any additional help, I would be glad to help! Good luck and hope you get to cooler days!

Washer just hums when started wont do anything

Very difficult to say, but....
First, I would remove the belt, check for obstructions, and see if you can manually rotate the motor. If the motor seems to turn with no problems, does the motor spin with the belt removed? If the motor will not turn, you may need to replace the motor or the starter capacitor.
Things seem to run fine until it is time for the motor to spin, so it is probably not a defective switch in the door or similar.
I usually take a quick look for something obvious and then call the repair person :-(
Note that anytime you mess with electricity, bad things can happen (you know, death, etc....). I assume that you know how to stay safe and that things like capacitors may have a charge even when the unit is not plugged in.

Check and tighten all wiring. Replace the capacitor and add a HardStart to the capacitor.Check the indoor coil for dirt/dust/obstruction. Check the outdoor fan motor for over-heating.

My washer stopped mid cycle and wouldnt drain or spin or anything. The error message is "nd". Can I fix it myself? thanks

Hi

ND=-no drain error.
Remove the back panel you will see the pump. Simply remove the pump and remove the obstruction that is keeping it from draining. Check for thongs, baby socks and sometimes hair pins or even screws can obstruct the water pump. There's going to be some water left in the pump and drain hose, so get a large towel ready. Remove screws attaching black piece (motor) to white piece (housing), pull out motor and clean the housing and motor impeller. Reverse steps to assemble it back together. If you don't hear pump running after completing the cleaning, you may need to check the wiring and/or replace main control board located inside the console. If the pump seems to be running but no water is being drained - replace pump.

Please get back to us if you have further query else please accept the suggestion.

Does not cool ?

there are 3 possiblities
  1. something obstructing the lower fan motor (or exhaust motor)
  2. bad fan capacitor
  3. or bad motor
to check any of these you will need to disassemble the unit to get to the blower. there are several screws located at various points on the plastic housing covering the unit. Once removed you should be able to check for motor obstructions visually. for checking the motor and capacitor you will need a volt/ohm meter and ideally a capacitor checker. you could try to spin start the motor while it is powered up this could be a possible sign of a bad capacitor if it will start when you do this or if the motor will spin freely while powered down and will not spin start when powered up. I know that is kind of confusing but its how they work.
