You can try reset your phone,
Turn
off the phone, remove the AC adapter, press and hold the page/call
button that is on the phone and plug back your Ac adapter, see if this fix the problem.

You are too far away from the base station to the phone you are using, or the aerial on the base station isn't extended up, (if it has one). Experiment! Make a call standing next to the base station.
Unfortunately the Unidens have a problem with batteries. Leaving it on the base for a long time without discharging it can lower the lifespan of a battery.
But your problem is that the it lost connections with your service provider. Turn off everything by unplugging the power only from all the devices. Turn on just your cable phone service box first and give it 5 minutes to connect. Then power on the phone. If you still have issues, you need to contact your phone service provider to make sure the box is connection.
it means that you are to far away from the main signal. where the voice mail is.
if you are not to far away try putting your phone on the main base and use it again

I don't know why it won't come off, only 4 screws hold it on. It should just lift off of the stand.
