Hi,
You cannot do that with out changing the complete dryer unit.
Dryer are built specifically for either electric or gas...they had to change the dryer to switch it and you will need to get a new dryer to change back.

I am trying to hook up this dryer that did not come with instuctions

Hi erika9897...
You did not say if your dryer was electric or gas...
I would say let an expert install your dryer if it is gas.
If it is electric then all you will need to do is wire the cord to the back of the dryer at the electrical connections.
If that is what you need then here is a webpage to go to...it will have a picture of how to wire up your dryer if its a three wire or 4 wire connection...
Please take time to rate me

My dryer dont dry

Possible causes depend on the dryer model and type. Electric dryers work diffeently from gas dryer.

Both electric and gas dryers usually have a thermal fuse located at the back of the appliance. Check if thermal fuse/switch is blown or tripped , and eventually replace it.

If the fuse is ok, and appliance is running but not drying, then next part to test will be the thermostat.

A dryer thermostat can be tested using a multimeter , set to read impedance at RX1. If the thermostat is good, it must have low Ohms at room temp, and return no continuity (infinite ohms) at temp. limit.

At this points things are different depending if dryer is gas or electrical.

On a gas dryer test valve , fan and ignitor.

On electric test the heating element and fan.

On both gas and electric, last part to be tested is the timer control board. If all other parts are fine, go for the timer board.

Not heating

Hi

Things that could stop a electric dryer from heating:
  • house fuse or breaker ( needs two of them )
  • heating element, burnt wire
  • thermostat(s), thermal fuse ( not all models ),
  • motor heat switch, timer, selector switch,
  • burnt power cord/plug.
You can check these things using an ohmmeter/multimeter from here.

Things that could stop a gas dryer from heating:

  • glow bar igniter,
  • thermal fuse ( not all models ),
  • coils on the gas valve, gas valve, thermostats,
  • motor heat switch, timer, selector switch, sensor.

A page for checking gas dryers is here.

No heat

The dryer complaint of "No Heat At All" can be a couple things for a given gas or electric dryer. (Keeping in mind; Insufficient "too long" to heat is a different type of complaint)

Defective Ignition Systems

For Gas Dryers; Thermal fuses (white - very likely), Gas valve coils (black; battery size; likely), Thermal Sensors (black, square; rare, but likely) and also Electric Ignitors (Glows red; likely) are very common for "no heat" complaints.

For Electric Dryers: Hi/low limit cut-off switches (Very likely) and electric heating element/coils (Likely) are very common. Also, tripped breakers for electric dryers (Very likely; may only be receiving 110v instead of the 240v needed)

With respect to your dryer vent-line; the line may be clamped down too tight. You may need a 1/4 screwdriver to loosen and remove (assuming it is not taped down)

Gas dryer runs but has no heat

Could be any number of things starting with thermal fuse, ignitor failure, non-resetable thermal switch, thermal swithc that requires manual reset. Hard to resolve your problem without a specific brand or model. Hope this gives you some ideas where to begin diagnosing your problem...

Keeps heating on cooldown

needs new timer switch
the timer swithc contains 2 switches one for the motor and one for the heating element, the element switch has fused closed. not reliably repairable,

even if open the timer, break apart the contacts, file them smooth, reassemble, will still lock up again

replacement is less than a new dryer

Need help with OLD dryer

IF YOU MEAN THAT THE DRYER STARTS BACK UP WHEN YOU CLOSE THE DOOR, THE PUSH TO START SWITCH IS SHORTED. CHECK TO SEE IF THE PUSH TO START BUTTON IS STUCK PRESSED IN AND NOT SPRINGING BACK OUT.
IF IT IS STUCK, TRY WD-40 TO LOOSTEN IT. OTHERWISE, REPLACE THE SWITCH.

IF THE DRYER KEEPS RUNNING WHEN YOU "OPEN" THE DOOR, THE DOOR SWITCH IS SHORTED. REPLACE THE DOOR SWITCH.
