I would test the water you're using, I suspect it's not distilled even if it's labeled as such. The boiler may have to be re-claimed by a tech. if descaling and changing H2O sources don't correct the problem.
Over the range ovens of all brands are prone to failure of the electronics due to heat and steam from the food that's cooked on the range below them. It's not extremely common, but you do see more of these types of failures on these as opposed to counter top models.
Steam is OK as it means whatever is in there is boiling furiously, it may need turning off at that point! Smoke though means it has gone too far. Check the cooking times used and the recommended cooking times on the packet along with the adjustment for the power of your oven.
Re: GE JES1384SF Mine quit working so I unplugged it and put a pot of boiling water in it and let the steam dissolve whatever was gumming things up. I used an electric hot plate to keep the water boiling. I let it boil for a couple of hours. I left the door 2/3 open. The microwave is working again. It is four years old and has been used every day, many times a day before it stopped working.
IF YOU USE THE MICRO WAVE ALOT WHEN YOU COOK SOMETHING THE STEAM FROM THE FOOD BUILDS ON THE INSIDE AND CAUSES THIS PROBLEM. THE HINGES ARE OPEN AREAS WHERE THIS STEAM CAN COLLECT. NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT
IT'S JUST ONE OF THOSE THINGS THAT HAPPEN
my kenmore microwave model # 66222, doesn't let the steam out, its ventilated so I know thats not the problem, smells like its burning then shuts off and doesn't come back on until its cooled off, this happened when cooking a Baked Potato, also when I cook something for over 5 minutes
