Question about Olympus mju 740 Digital Camera
I bought this camera a year ago, together with its u/w housing. At first it worked well but after about a month it the screen started to go black but the red pilot lamp would stay on as though it was recording a picture. sometimes it comes back on automatically, while other times I have to switch it on again.
It can happen when I try to shoot a picture and sometimes on its own.
All this happens only when it is in the housing, irrelevant of the depth (10 mt to 40 mt).
I sent it to Olympus but they returned it saying there was nothing wrong, but the problem persists. Sometimes this can go on during the entire dive.
Has anybody had a similar problem?

Try running camera directly on DC from charger and see if it stays functioning.
If it does, they you either have:-
1) a faulty Lion battery
2) the battery detect circuit in the camera is faulty (reporting low battery and forcing shutdown)
3) the power switch on top of the camera may be leaky or partially collapsed
4) internal power supply circuit in camera has developed a fault.
Good luck...hope that the issue is the battery.

hmmm..well...let's see...poor resolution comes from one of two sources.
focal lengthe issues..
guess we'll try focal length...did you check to see that the housing and the lens are compatible, and perhaps you are experiencing refraction 101?

I had this happen and fixed it by removing the battery and leaving it out overnight and making sure it was fully charged - the next day battery inserted and it was ok. Prior to inserting battery I opened shutter cover and help down shutter release to try to drain any residual power. - Worth a try.

The mode dial switch, zoom and power are all on the same ribbon cable. If you can spray some electrical contact cleaner into the crease of the mode dial, power button and zoom lever, it may be enough to get thing going again. I would try this with the camera inverted to reduce the spread of the cleaner. The upgrade process takes about 35 seconds. Make a file called firmware on your memory card, download the .bin file into the firmware folder and turn on the camera in play mode. The current version of the firmware will appear and an OK, press "OK" and the firmware will start to update. Do this after a factory reset as you stated that it was stable for 30 minutes. Good luck. Contact me pishta68 at hotmail dot com if you have any questions. I have 2 and a "half" of these cameras. I think the most current firmware is v757-78
