Question about Seagate (ST3250824AS) 250 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Windows 2000 advanced Server does not support Seagate 250 GB Hard Drive.

I have Windows 2000 advanced server installed on 250 GB SATA Hard Drive. But it recognises only upto 160 GB. How do i enable it to recognise 250GB SATA Hard Drive? Is there any solution or is there any changes in windows registry to be made, so that that Hard Disk is recognised?

I did consider this option, but Win2k server family doesn't support beyond 160GB. That is in my opinion. If U have a solution, pls post it.

I am inclined to think that this would be a problem with the jumper settings limiting the size of the drive.
I can't offer anything more than that, sorry. Hope it will help a bit.

Turn the computer off.
Turn the computer on, and press <DEL> to enter BIOS SETUP.
Ensure that the hard-drive is "enabled", and set to 'AHCI'.
Save the BIOS settings.
Reboot, and install Windows.

Running under the assumption that the CD is actually working, have you checked the BIOS settings to indicate that you want the CD to be the first boot device?

Alternatively, some if not most systems will accept an F12 during boot up to query the user where to boot from.

Compaq Mini 700EL hdd not recognised

If you are installing Windows XP then -
The problem is that XP installation CD does not have a SATA driver, unless you have a SATA drive on a disk etc. and can install the driver when XP asks for a hard drive driver then, XP cannot detect the hard disk and therefore won't install XP. The FIX. Go into the BIOS and disable the SATA drive (enable IDE emulation), this will make XP think it is a IDE/PATA hard disk. Then you can install XP normally. When Windows has been installed then install all the device drivers (including the SATA driver), then shut down and boot up and got into the BIOS and enable the SATA drive.

If you are using Windows XP, you will need to download the Sata driver for this motherboard, save to a USB or floppy on another computer and when installing windows xp, at the "f6" prompt, direct it to where you saved the driver (ie: make sure the floppy / usb stick is plugged into the computer you are insytalling to), it will install the sata driver and then it will recognise your hard drive, no need to disable the sata chip on the mobo

You may need to address the way that the old HDD was used in the BIOS. Meaning that if you had regular IDE drive the setting that may be in the BIOS might need to bee disabled and that could be the cause to the new SATA IDE controller you have installed as a boot device. Also if you are trying to boot from you new SATA drive you will need to install some form of and operating system on it like windows or whatever you have been using.

Sometimes it’s easier to create a disk image of the old drive and transfer it to you new SATA, using a disk image utility like Norton Ghost.

Of course I am assuming that you are using a PC and not a MAC.
