My Garmin nuvi 680 (not 660) will no longer charge or activate automatically in my car outlet or any car outlet. Will charge in the house with the plug in charger. I tried the reset button with no change.
My Garmin 760 has been working beautifully for about 4 months. Now it no longer charges in the car. I can charge mobile pones from same socket and I can charge the Garmin from the PC through USB, but it doesn't recognise the charge from the lighter socket.

Replacing the nuvi 660's battery is actually not all that hard as this video demonstrates: You-Tube video "S2KEu_if7wA" placeholder (do not delete) The company that produced the video sells a kit which includes the battery and tools necessary to do this yourself if you'd like. See: http://www.newpower99.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=GARMIN+NUVI+660&Show=ExtInfo I swapped the battery of a friend's dying GPS using the aforementioned kit and all went well. His nuvi 680 is back up and running smoothly.
Your not the Lone Ranger on this problem. After awhile the battery will no longer take a charge. IT is not a replaceable battery by the user. It must be sent back to Garmin for a new battery. If you only use the gps when in a vehicle, it still will work fine when pluged into a 12v source.

I had the same problem. My Nuvi 350 did not power up for a couple of days. I suspected moisture to be the culprit. So I took my wife's hair dryer and blew hot air(in the intermediate setting) into the SD card slot in the GPS for a couple of minutes. Take care not to overheat the GPS or Screen. Pronto my GPS powered up without any issues. Hope this helps
