Hi I have a Dell Studio 17/1745 Laptop and today while I was using it, it shut off right in the middle of my work. Now the computer won't turn on. It acts like it's going to but shuts right back down. HELP!!! I live on my laptop and now I'm having to use my desktop.

How far into the start up process does it get? What operating system are you using? Do you see any messages before it shuts down?

There are no messages before it shuts down. I was in the middle of something and it just shut down. One time it just rebooted itself. Now when I try to turn it back on all it does is this:

It will light up the top portion of the keyboard and nothing will come on the screen and then it just goes back off. I use Windows XP. I'm not sure what to say on what operting systen I'm using. My husband may know but I will have to ask him later.

I forgot my windows login password for a dell studio 1737 laptop

What OS are you having?

On XP you can try this:
Boot computer and press Ctrl+Alt+Delete twice when you See Windows welcome screen / login screen. It'll show classic login box. Now type "Administrator" (without quotes) in username field and leave password field blank, press Enter and you should be able to login Windows.
Now you can reset windows password from "Control Panel -> User Accounts".

On Win 7 or Vista:
Ctrl+Alt+Delete won't work, you have to use some windows password recovery software. I recommend Windows Password Recovery Tool 3.0 .

I have a Dell Studio 1745 Laptop and today it shut down right in the middle of me doing something and now it won't turn back on. When I push the on button the top portion of the keyboard lights up and...

It may be that one of your RAM sticks is not seated properly in its holder.

Try unplugging the power cord, and removing the battery.

Then remove the cover plate on the underside of the laptop to reveal the RAM memory slots.

Unclip and remove your ram modules then put them right back in the same spot and make sure they are seated firmly and properly in their slots.

Now reboot the computer and see if that makes a difference.

It is also possible that one of your RAM sticks is faulty.

If you have more than one installed, try taking each one out in turn and booting the computer with just one ram stick installed. If the machine will never boot whenever one particular stick is installed, then that is probably just a bad stick of ram and you should just replace it with a new one.

Good luck.

like most people , I'll bet when you use your laptop at times its on a bed or, like it's called, your lap. On many laptops the fan to cool it sucks air in from the bottom and if its being blocked the processor heats up quick and shuts down.

Hi,
Try running the diagnostics on the computer to check if all the hardware is working fine. The diagnostics would take atleast 2 hrs to complete but would do a through check for the same. I have come accross the same issue on the said laptop and we have ended up replacing the system fan for the same.

To run the diagontics
1. Shut down the system
2. Press and hold the FN key on the keyboard and press the power button to start the system
3. Follow the screen prompts to run the diagnostics.

Note and post back any error codes if any

Thanks for using fixya
