Thread jams in bobbin area

Last week, my son tried to sew material that was too thick. He jammed my machine (Kenmore 385.15243/15343) and the needle broke. I replaced the needle and cleared everything out. The feed dog was lowered and I fit that back into place. Now, when I try to sew, it works for about an inch then jams. The entire bobbin area is filled with thread and then the shuttle hook quits moving and the needle hits it. Everything stops. Can anyone tell me what else I can do to clear this up?
thanks

I was sewing through yow thicknesses of duck fabric with a denim needle when the needle broke. I inserted a new needle but it cannot move to it's lower positions because it hits metal - with or without the bobbin case in place. Is there anything I can try or is this something that only a technician can address? Thanks for your input.

Well i have done the same thing , all u need to do is if you see the screws that hold the bobbin area you un screwq thoes and get you a pair of scisors and cut around the knoted mess and all you do is work with it until it is all out and you dont realy want to pull on it to much you know just work it around so it gets lose so that you can cut it out thin you put it back together and try it out.

Handwheel is locked down

Several things to check. Did the needle break and jam in the bottom? Is the needle bent or did it jam in the bobbin area? I had a 'knot' of thread build up on the bottom and it hooked itself into the metal clip on the bobbin so that the needle couldn't raise. If thread jams in the bottom cut the threads until you can free the hoop and material. Check the bobbin for pieces of thread and fuzz. Check to see if the bobbin case or the throat plate is scratched or bent. If you are stitching Free Standing Lace on this machine or a piece with over 20,000 stitches I recommend starting with a new full bobbin and a new needle. As you get toward the bottom of the bobbin, thread seems to have a high likelihood of tangling or looping and will cause a jam which means the handwheel locks.

Upper thread gets jammed in bobbin area

Try these suggestions
1. Change the needle--use a needle that's for the fabric being sewed
2. Rethread the machine--top --make sure to use every thread guide
3. try a different bobbin--make sure bobbin is inserted correctly into the bobbin case, & make sure the bobbin is turned the correct way in the bobbin case
4. make sure the thread has not come off the thread take up lever
5. Clean under the needle plate & in the bobbin area for lint or threads

Bobbin jamming

try changing the needle
make sure the thread has not come off the thread take up lever
clean under the needle plate & in the bobbin area for lint
rethread the top part of the machine using every thread guide
if none of theses suggestions work, the machine needs to be
checked to see if there is a problem with timing

Out of nowhere, after working fine for weeks, the bobbin thread started breaking, and then stopped "wrapping" properly around the outside of the bobbin while I sewed. It keeps jamming to where I...

Change needle
Clean under needle plate where feed dogs are for lint
Clean bobbin area for lint or loose threads
Rethread machine top thread make sure to get every thread guide
& bobbin is threaded correctly & inserted in the bobbin case or shuttle correctly
Check tension 3 or 4 is usually good

after you try all this & it keeps jamming then it may need to be serviced

The bobbin thread will not pick up. The machine had jammed and I forced the wheel and can't get bobbin thread to pick up. When I thread manually, I only get holes, no stitches. Is it a timing belt?

check your needle to see if it's bent---roll on flat surface to see if it roll correctly
on some sewing machines when the thread comes off the thread take up lever it can cause the machine to jam
also if the bobbin thread becomes tangled it can jam
check the bobbin area for lint or loose threads
try having a top thread tail & bobbin thread tail of 3-4 inches
try holding the top thread tail & turn the handwheel on the right side on the machine manually & put the needle down into the bobbin area & see if the bobbin thread will pick up that way

Thread bunching and jamming in bobbin area

what you have is known as bird nesting and is from the needle tension not being tight enough
before you thread the needle pull the thread and the correct tension is when there is noticeable resistance to pulling the thread
always check adjustments using scrap material

Bobbin thread getting jammed

kyoungblood4
Are you making sure that your pressure foot is up when you thread the upper thread? If it isn't then your thread is not seating correctly in the tension disks. It will then be loose and make a birds nest(mess) under what you are trying to sew. The other thing to check is which way you are putting the bobbin into the bobbin case, different machines do it different ways. Some want the thread to come out of the case in the same direction as the slot on the case and some want it to come off in the opposite direction.

Guest,
Probably when your son broke the needle he knocked it out of time. You will need to have a sewing machine technician to repair that.

Hope this has been helpful for you bothl Liz M

Not sewing - jamming

Could it be that the feed dogs are down? I also have the 15358 and when I opened the bobbin area to clean it, I had this problem. Apparently, when you open the clips around the outside of the casing, it pushes the lever that adjusts the feed dogs to the right (lowering them). I didn't even realize it at first. Check your manual for adjusting this lever to raise the feed dogs. That might solve your problem.
