Just clean its laser pickup lens, by inserting a lens cleaning disc in to, and play it at least two times. If it doesn't help you, the laser pickup unit should be replaced. The lens cleaning disc can be bought from most of the electronic sparepart selling shops at your town, and won't cost more.

It can play mpeg-4 video and divx video.

what do you mean by 3rd party dvd? is it commercial dvds? is it the region code problem? i mean if you get DVD that does not match with the region code of your dvd player, it wont play.

Does the player ask for a password?
If it does look in the manual or contact Philips on their website.

How To Make Region Free:

press Setup
select the Preference Tab
Press 1 3 8 9 3 1
Press up/down key to select "0"
and press Setup to exit.

If you can't get into Preferences Tab, you may need to press the stop button twice first, then press setup.

Is there a Divx logo on the player? Does this particular DVD player capable of reading DVD+R disks?

If you used the Divx converter program, there is a way to create a DVD in Divx format with menus. Did you use that particular program? If you didn't, you may have the DVD in a data format and the player can't read it that way.

No Sir, You can't upgrade DVP-NS530 to play DivX format. This player has no ability to play DivX nor it can be upgraded.

Its not supposed to play Dix AVI movie files.
For a DVD player to play anything other than a DVD movie the manufacturer must pay royalties to who ever owns the patent, for example they would have to pay Philips say $1 for every DVD player made that plays VCD's, that may not sound a lot but, make 100,000 dvd players and they would have to pay Philips $100,000.
The technology has to be put into the device for it to work.
