How to boot into safe mode or VGA mode Sometimes while changing video cards you can get Windows into such a bad state that it refuses to boot. If something is wrong with your display drivers Windows will often be unable to start up properly. But in order to fix the problem you need to get into Windows so you can re-install or fix your display drivers. So Windows won't run but you need to use Windows to try to fix the problem. Fortunately Windows can run in "safe mode" which allows it to boot while not using your installed display drivers. Unless Windows is severely damaged, it should be able to boot in safe mode.

To get into safe mode with Windows 98 and ME press and hold the Ctrl key immediately after you turn on your computer. In other versions of Windows you need to press the F8 key. On some computers you can press and hold F8 and on others you have to press F8 at the right time which is usually just after the initial BIOS screen (see fiddling with your BIOS) has been displayed. If you can

I HAD REPLACED THE GRAPHIC CARD, NOW WHEN I SWITCH ON THE COMPUTER ALL I SEE IS SIGNALS OUT OF RANGE. IM RUNNING W/XP.& A HP PAV. F 1523

Switch on the computer. Just as the BIOS messages or full screen logo is about to end, press F8 several times. Then you will see the Startup Menu for Windows XP. It will look like the following.
Safe mode Safe mode with command prompt Safe mode with ... .......................... ..........................
Check whether you have a option as 'Enable VGA mode'. If you see this, select it with arrow keys and press enter. You may have to press enter again.
(Since the computer was not shut down properly the last time you switched it on, you might see this menu when you switch on the computer. So simply select 'Enable VGA mode' )
The problem is you have a new VGA card and somewhat old monitor. The current Video Refresh Rate of the VGA is not supported by your monitor.
So once you start the computer in VGA mode, go to Display Properties, select 'Settings' tab (1), Click 'Advanced' button (2), Select 'Monitor' tab (3), Select the minimum value from the list (4) and click OK buttons(5).
Good luck! If you find this information useful, please give me a good rating.

Envision L19W761 LCD TV - VGA mode failure.

The resolution or refresh rate of the computer is not compatible with the TV. Before the computer starts loading Windows, start tapping F8 and select "Enable VGA Mode" from the menu that appears, this will set your computer to a very low resolution (640x480). I believe the option is actually called "Enable low resolution video" on Vista, it's VGA mode in XP. Now you should get a picture on the TV, work your way up from there.
