Sounds like a defrost problem. Check to see if there is any frost buildup in the back wall of the freezer. If so, it is not defrosting as it should.

  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer
  2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)
  3. bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above items.
  • if you already checked this and think it is a different problem then let me know, i will help you figure it out.

I have a Kenmore bottom freezer model 596.75934401. The refrigerator top has stopped cooling while the bottom freezer is working but showing some accumulation of icing. I have unplugged the regrigerator,...

There are a couple possibilities. You need to make sure the evaporator fan in the freezer is working, it circulates the cool air to the top. More likely your coil in the freezer is iced up due to defrost part failure, either the timer or the heater assembly. The back panel is going to have to come off. If you defrost the coil completely, the unit will work again until it ices up again. You have to have the defrost system diagnosed and the defective part replaced

I have a Hotpoint, model # Hsm25gfre sa, that is cooling and freezing unevenly. Everything onthe bottom half of the freezer is frozen and the top half is thawing. Also, the water in the ice maker is not...

Make sure that the freezer fan is working and circulating the cold air. Then check the damper assembly to make sure that cold air is being circulated into the refrigerator. And lastly make sure that the self defroster is working - if not the evaporator will freeze up, freezer temps go up, and ice maker will not work if freezer temps are 10 degrees or higher. A digital refrigerator thermometer will confirm freezer temps being high.

Refrigerator not cool, freezer ok

Either the freezer continues to freeze up (most likely due to low refrigerant, due to a leak), or there is an obstruction between the freezer and the refrigerator (refrigerators get their cooling from the freezer).

Given that it works after you defrost it, I'm going with low gas. Call a professional to see if the leak can be fixed. If the unit is more than 10 years old, just get a new one.
